I got a phone call from my dad last night. He just got back from the cabin after replacing a heating element on a hot water heater. He said he got to spend a day in the woods with his bow and noticed that something was really working over one of the mock scrapes I started. I started it in August and recharged it in early October. The Magnum (two week) dripper should be empty by now but apparently I got something started on it and they keep coming back. He was sure something had been by pretty recently because there were no leaves on the scrape and leaves were falling pretty good. He took a detour by this spot while on his way to another stand so I’m sure he was sprayed down and scent control should not be an issue. This was the first year I’ve ever tried to start a mock scrape and I only started two of them. Knowing that at least one is getting worked over is pretty cool. Oh yeah, it’s about 14 yards from a stand. Woot!

My wife and daughter are taking an extended weekend in San Antonio. Visiting sea world, so I took the opportunity to pack my gear and head north to hunt on my grand parent in-laws property. I'm hoping for a chance at as mature buck that hasn't been pressured yet this season as nobody bow hunts this property. There have been some nice deer taken off this property in the past. I'm set up on a saddle between two ditches, and it is littered with fresh scrapes. I didn't have any luck this morning, but I still believe I'm in a good spot. Hoping to add some points to the board.

Well, here's the plan for tomorrow morning. I was originally planning to continue on with operation whack ole Flow. Yes, I named that old hussy that keeps busting me. I was set an ready and I know she will come through tomorrow morning but, she's smart and if the wind isn't right, I can't hunt her. In the morning the wind is not in my favor except one stand I was saving for rut. The wind is perfect so I'm hunting it. Who knows maybe a bruiser will step out.

Bucks were grunting and doe were in their feet. Had 7 slick heads within 5yd Saturday morning. I was hoping one would bring a buck in but, didn't. I'll be moving my stand to the other side of the tree and hunt that stand again toward middle of November. I feel like I was right about it being a great rut stand.

Well I had an eventful weekend that I just couldn't close the deal on. I had my #1 hit list buck within 35 yards 3 times on 2 different sits. Friday night it was windy and he was in my lap at 35. I had no time to stop him in my 1 lane as he headed away. Sunday morning he walked behind me at 20 yards and then looped around in front of me at 15 yards before 25 minutes later milling back in front of me at 15 yards. He stopped for 3-4 minutes right in front of me and just stared off in distance. All together he was in shooting range for 45 minutes and 30 of them I knew it was him. Needless to say this all happened at a time when I could see what he was through bins, but was before legal shooting light (couldn't see my pins if I wanted to).

The neighboring lease is hunting this buck hard as well. HE actually beds next door on theirs I believe. That being said, he has been very active on our property. There is also another good buck I got on camera here that I would also like to get so we will see if they are still out there when I get back out later this week.

Saturday night I also had a nice 130 at 45 yards but at last light and no shot. For me its always bee about seeing the right one and not so much about seeing a lot of deer. Keeping that in mind it was actually a strong weekend! All in alpa captivity was minimal and sightings reflected it.

Sign is everywhere now except on 1 of our properties which there is none. I'm hoping I can get on him this next weekend as things should be ramped up. Any advice on calling going into this next week? I want to bring him in and be pretty aggressive, but not deter him from the area. He is definitely the dominate buck in the area.

SOunds like you had a great weekend of hunting. I havent taken my bow to the woods since
i kiled the doe in early october. My brother in law is home from the military. He is changing jobs to be a recruiter so he doesnt have to deploy so much. The last 3 years hes been in Afghanistan off and on and has only been home to hunt for a couple days around christmas. Ive been filming him for the last 3 weeks kinda doing a military addition of bow hunt or die. I just felt that god was leading me to do it so thats what I did. TY has killed 3 deer with is bow in his lifetime. SO we had some interesting times over the past three weeks. On friday night we had the right wind to get back on a scrape line and it was rocking. It was by far the most memorable hunt of my life so far. Make sure you watch the show on friday the reactions are priceless. Heres my favorite pic.

    Stay safe and hunt hard

It's not about who leads, it's who's on top in the end. We were in the same position last year, then we killed a bunch of good bucks. There's no pressure on us, we're already champions.

Couple new bucks turned up. The wide 8 is one I have 3 years of history with. Threw in a picture of a Fisher as well. I have many encounters with them each season.

No sweat! We came out of nowhere (well, a little higher than middle) to win it by a land slide little buddy. Not saying that will happen again. What I am saying is its awfully early for anyone to celebrate. Heck rut isn't even kicking off good yet in most places. A lot of bone will hit the ground over the next month. Score board don mean squat yet!

Good lord what a weekend I had. I was to busy to even post about my hunt Saturday morning. It was the most eventful in 2 seasons.

Squirrels played from just before day break so it wasn't a quiet morning at all. At around 8:20 I heard what I thought was a tree rat pouncing around to my right and behind me. It got loud then stopped. I slowly turned my head and there stood the old hag I've been hunting. She stood there maybe 5 seconds. Then leaped forward one leap and was standing at 5 yards. I was 12' up and couldn't move. Had my hand on my bow ready to pick it up and split her wig. She was the calmest I've seen her. Wagging her tail and looking around in a playful manner. She looked beginner her several times and as quickly as she arrived, she bounced away.

At this point I was just happy she didn't busy me again. I was almost relieved as I would have had to move a pretty good amount considering she was on my right side. I knew it wasn't her morning to take a Dirtnap. I decided to stay in later this time due to the fruits of my patience the last hunt when I put my last one to sleep. Shortly after she bounded off, I heard a deep grunt coming from the bottom of the hill. All I had was a doe bleat and a rattle bag. I have a 4 year old that totaled my flextone and I haven't thought to buy another one. I tried to get his interest and may very well have if I had a grunt tube. Oh well, lesson learned. Now back to the hunt.

Let me add I set this stand up in June and had not been back since. At the time my focus was on two travel trails in which I had scouted the day I hung the stand. One in front at 20ish yards and another to the right at 18yards. I never even thought to scout the other side of the tree. At 9:15 (I use to get out at about this time) I heard that sound we all love to hear. I looked to the right and her came 2 doe. Headed where? That's right, behind me. I watched hopelessly as not just those two but, 6 total all walked to the spot where the last doe stopped the first time and they stopped. Had my stand been hanging on the other side of the tree, I would have had my choice of shot at 6 mature doe. All bigger than the last one I shot.

So here I am typing up a story of missed opportunity. If only I were that negative about hunting would that be true. What I sit here typing about is a lesson. One in which I learned a lot about patients, endurance, learning how to learn and not get frustrated and confirmation. Confirmation that I have a good stand set up for rut and that I have matured severely as a hunter. This was an opportunity to see the fruits of my labor pay dividends in the way of knowledge.

Now to use this lesson about this stand and kill a buck out of it! I'll stay out of it until rut which should be a couple more weeks and it will be in full swing here I believe.

I'll be back at meet hunting this coming Sunday and waiting the perfect time to be back in this stand.

The rut is definitely ramping up here in north MO. I've seen quite a bit of sparring and the scrape lines are heating up. We're pretty much done with the harvest so I'll have more time on stand.
My cousin arrowed this 146" 8 point near my farm. Hope the luck is contagious!
