I think that any deer killed is a great deer. Congrats and thanks for breaking the seal and getting us on the board

Do I still need to score the buck if he is under 50"? Or do I just get the automatic 50 pts?

Shot this deer 7:30am on 9-29-12, I shot him at 19yrds from a stool on the ground. I was tucked up in some cedar trees along a well used deer trail that parallels treeline wearing my leafy suit. I got him using my 2007 Diamond Liberty, Spott Hogg Hogg It sights, Trophy Taker arrow rest, gold Tip 5575 arrows w/Blazer Vanes, and Muzzy 100gr 3-Blade fixed broadheads... Season opened here today in Texas, due to management practices for this county we get a "Spike" tag to be used on a buck that has at least, one unbranched antler, and then we get another buck tag to be used on a buck that has a 13" or greater inside spread, plus 2 doe tags. This guy walked out first.. Therefore, I gave him a dirt nap. He ran about 30 yrds. and fell over, never knew what hit him.. Double Lunged him. By contest rules i have to use my first killed buck as my buck score. wish i didnt have too, but hey I dont make the rules.. Anyways guys thanks for all your enthusiasm, I wish you all luck.. I am proud to be a part of Team ""knocked and Locked"! Guess we got 50pts on the board. I'm about to add him to the score card right now.

Your right about that Hoyt... It is tough..I've kind of made it an art... I use a little tripod stool and my leafy suit.... Play the wind...and blend in... I rarely use a blind i just back up in a cedar... I started doing this a few years ago when farmers stopped growing crops on some of the fields i hunt on, eventually johnson grass and cedar trees took over, really no place to hang a stand, deer would cross right through the middle of this shrubbary and tall grass and avoid pinch points at tree lines.... So i got versitile.. but honestly I have harvested my fair share of deer by hunting like this... mature bucks and mature does, many of them... the key is to play the wind.... Trail cameras have really helped me pattern these deer so it has become a lot easier to choose what trails to hunt and when.... No bait or anything, just hunting the deer using their regular routines... ill be back in the woods tomorrow and monday so we will see if i can get a doe on the ground...

Congrats on the buck flyguy415! Great job getting this team rolling. I think things are going to start clicking for us now.

As for my I was skunked on yesterday morning's hunt, it will be 13 days until I set foot in the woods again. Got into sand for a great mornings hunt between corn and multiple bedding areas on a long ridge. Needless to say at 6am (still dark) the woods erupted with deer running everywhere. This occurred just after some howls came from a coyote in the area of where the deer came from.

Although my encounters remain poor, I am very optimistic as this is typical for my properties. I did see a hit list buck last night so that was also encouraging. Come on October 13th. haha. Good luck hunting crew.

Congrats flyguy! Glad we are on the board! I'll be in the stand tomorrow afternoon in a little honey hole I have not hunted. Been watching it for 2 seasons and its time to whack a doe out of it. Lol

When you hunt from the ground, other than wind and trying to blend, is there any advise that could put a new to ground hunting on the lead side of the learning curve?

My daughter helped me check cams today and I was pleasantly surprised by one of my turnip plots. There are a half acre of these! Got a plot watch cam on them now to see how the deer are using them. Not many pics of bucks today though.

About the only other things I might add about ground hunting is this... It's kind of trial and error type thing... I would recommend using your most recent information, if you have been seeing deer from a distance move in on them the next time you hunt. Don't be afraid to move in too close.. Because not moving in close enough won't put meat in the freezer, so I like to chance things.. I also don't like to hunt the same ground set up more than a couple of times.. Your scent will linger in the area and deer may come across your setup at night or when your not in the field and educate them... Keep moving, keep them guessing, don't let them pattern you... Also remember you may not be able to see deer before they are right on top of you do stay alert things happen fast it's not like hunting from a tree where you have time to prepare... Also I would think 20 maybe 30 yrds would be about the farthest safest shot.. And when setting up try to find areas that are naturally clear shooting lanes so your not spreading your scent all around you. Remember, this is a fast, kind of swat team type operation, move in make a kill and move out.. Hope this helps..

Unfortunately there most likely won't be any mule deer for me this year... I guided/filmed every day during September. That means I'm looking forward to Kansas and hopefully Illinois with you boys :D

Ha! Thanks dad, you go kill that kansas deer before I get there so I know what I have to beat. Oh and if you pull any funny business behind the camera right before I stick that booner. :) If you do... I'm taking the climbing sticks down and leaving you in the tree. :D
