I think I got your buddy beat- I got a bunch of these 'legitimately almost died' stories from when I was a kid...well, mostly from when I was a kid. I really shouldn't be here.

    lawnmower story time-

    upload_2024-9-25_23-46-16.png

one on of these when I was like 12, it was summer break and my parents were at work, I was mowing our creek bank next to the road and the grass was a little wet and the back wheels broke loose and down the bank I went, tractor flipped over and I tried to bail but my leg got wrapped up in between the engage lever and steering column and it rolled me up and pinned me face down in the water. It was all I could do to hold my head/face up a few inches above the water line. Miraculously my grandparents stopped by minutes later to check on me and my little sister, heard me hollering, and saw me at the bottom of the ditch. They were both pretty handicapped and couldn't physically go down the embankment. This was back before cell phones, so they had to go into the house to call 911. By the time the VFD showed up and pulled it off me, I had hypothermia and could barely keep my face up, and my grandparents were about to stroke out thinking they were going to have to watch me drown.

If it had happened the day before or even same day on a different stretch of the creek, I would have drowned for sure becuse the creek was about a foot higher from rain and naturally ran deeper in several stretches. Where I went in the water just happened to be just a few inches deep.

...of course my dad made me finish mowing the lawn the next morning. Almost 2 acres. With the pushmower.

I don't think about them often, but I have my fair share of "should have died" moments, as do a lot of my friends. I sometimes think about how close to death so many of us have been, but it didn't happen. Life is a fickle thing.

Kind of like deer hunting. How many deer have been one step, one errant shot, or one twig away from a trip to the deer processor?

Congrats! Don't forget you need two pictures of you, your bow, and the deer for the scorecard.

My doe has been posted to the score thread. Hunting a small suburban private piece. Had a spike come through first thing, then a group of 8 doe including the one I got came through eating acorns at 0825. Made a 25 yard quartering away shot. She went about 50 yards and piled up.

Since most of us will be hunting after this weekend or by Oct 1, as a reminder, the key to winning this contest is to shoot does. If we all kill a doe, with 9 teammates, that is 450 points right there. Personally, I am killing the first doe that comes in range and presents a good shot.

I passed a ton of does during early season last year, then by the time I decided I wanted to shoot one in December I never had an opportunity. This year I'm not waiting.

Meat is going to get more expensive, a full freezer is going to more important than ever over the next year.

I took Wednesday off. I used to not hunt mornings early October, but I saw like 9 deer last year on opening day morning. Depending on the wind and what stand I hunt, I’ll definitely shoot a doe in the morning if I get a chance. May try to get out Tuesday evening after work.

As far as freezer meat goes, not only is beef expensive, but twice this month we’ve bought rotten meat from Kroger. It looked fine, but it didn’t smell right. It was burgers previously and the other night, I cooked $25 flat iron steak to chop up for salads and wraps, it was going bad. After it was cooked, it turned gray and smelled terrible. Sell by date was 10/8

About a year and a half ago I started meal prepping all of my lunches and bringing them to work with me. I go through 2 lbs of ground venison per week just doing that. Not including any roasts or steaks I cook up, or any sausage or jerky that I make. My freezer is looking pretty bare right now and it's time to restock!

6 lbs of jerky dehydrating, 3 more on deck. 2” of mostly light steady rain on the food plot. Cell cam on the food plot hasn’t been very active aside from a doe here and there which is allowing it to actually grow instead of being mowed down like it usually does. They’re either on acorns or in the river bottoms where they’re harvesting.

Neighbors have started pressuring their property with youth weekend and there’s like 10 people that hunt there. Headlamps have fresh batteries, new caribeaners are stealth stripped for the saddle setup, back pack is packed.
    It’s all coming together.

Was sorting my pack out and checking my rangefinders and glad I did, my primary was off by like 12 yards at 45. Replaced the battery and it's back to normal.

Heading north tomorrow AM for a long afternoon sit and then all day Monday

I hunted this morning with my oldest. We saw a couple in the dark walking in, but nothing during daylight. We left around 10:30 when this joker showed up.

Some guy wearing blaze orange sat down on the ground 20 yards from the tree my son was in and started rattling.

EHD is working its way towards me. This buck was found 10 miles from me today I’m starting to get a sick feeling about this year. On another note the bucks local are starting to hit scrape regularly. [IMG]
