As much as I love cell cameras, they are also the worst things in the world. If you put them by your stands, which so many of us do, they will haunt you all season long. I know this and still do it myself.
They are, in fact, moving out of the bottoms. Now, hopefully the camera will get another big nasty sorting these dudes out, and then I kill said big nasty on Monday. Looks good on paper.
I have definitely noticed an increase in buck "roaming" activity in the last week. It's almost all at night, but the bigger ones are showing up in areas they haven't been in all summer. I call this the "walkabout" phase. They're out roaming at night, getting the lay of the land, taking note of where the does are hanging out, making scrapes, and prepping for what's to come. I've always compared this to my younger years of showing up at a bar and making a loop around to see who was there and what I was working with that night.
Caught this guy out taking a lap last night. I'm enjoying this Flashback camera with the old-school white flash.
Saturday morning can not get here fast enough. I am going to be worthless at work the next couple of days. There is a big field across the street from my kids school that feeds into woods and creek bottom. We have been seeing 4-10 deer in it every morning this week when I drop the kids off. It is private property, but the consistent deer movement an hour after daylight is very encouraging for this weekend. My kids are on fall break Monday and Tuesday. The older boys have football practice from 2:30 to 5:15, I was planning on hunting solo Monday evening, but, I may have to take my youngest with me and sit somewhere on the ground if he wants to get out. He has been asking.
wife isn't happy, but I am hunting this weekend. Her fault for volunteering to work on Sunday. Quick Saturday PM/Sunday AM/maybe Sunday PM trip to MI. Supposed to start raining Sunday afternoon so might bail mid-day depending on how hard.
Good luck to those who are hunting this weekend. I was going to go tomorrow morning, but it’s going to be warm and I need sleep. Work has been kicking my ass. The wife’s bday is this weekend and we’re going tomorrow for a date day and to get her a 350 legend of some sort, most likely Ruger American gen 2. I’ll definitely be out in the woods Monday and Tuesday.
Those are great rifles for the money. My buddy has one in .243 and it's a slick shooter. MOA with Barnes factory ammo and a very smooth bolt. Plan to get several in different calibers, starting w .400 Legend.
Well, if you do not follow LFTS, I took my oldest out Saturday morning to what is normally a reliable doe killing spot. Unfortunately, it became our second sit there with no luck. We got set up about 45 minutes before legal light when I accidentally bumped my bow and it fell out of the tree. The top cam had a cable get bumped off. Fortunately, that as the only damage. After a quick trip to the local shop, I was quickly fixed up. The picture below is of a shot from 40 this afternoon. Plan is to take my youngest out for a squirrel hunt/scout/sit the last couple hours of daylight tomorrow afternoon. My kids are on fall break tomorrow and Tuesday, okder biys have football practice in the afternoon. After we drop then off, we will hit the woods. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
I finally got a hunt in for myself on Saturday afternoon - well, kind of anyways. My wife was out of town this weekend and I had both of my boys with me. I let the older one go out on his own adventure and took the little guy (7) with me. Our only option was a double ladder stand on a small food plot that's now dead due to lack of rain, with the completely wrong wind direction. Yay! Fortunately, we ended up seeing four deer, including three in bow range. About an hour before dark, we had a young buck nudge a big doe and fawn around. He pushed her almost into our lap, but she was on the wrong side of the tree and never came out of the brush. I "maybe" had a shot through a small hole, but it wasn't worth risking it, so I let her walk. All things considered, it wasn't a terrible outing. We had deer in bow range, and he got to watch the little buck make a scrape right in front of us. I'm hoping to get a sit or two this week with these cold temps - just not sure when and where yet.
