Looked in a clover field and small bean field today. Got skunked. First time I have ever shed hunted in January. My usual spots are all private and any shed dropped in January is still laying there in March when I look. But you guys had me motivated to hit some fields where I have been seeing some bucks feed. Problem is, there had been some guys in there late season doe hunting and I think they have pretty well busted the deer out of that area. I am going to keep hitting some spots that I have never shed hunted before just to get out a little earlier than usual.
Out after work last night. Got into a spot where I have found some the past 2-3 years...nothing. Looked like I was the 1st one in there too. I suppose the snow still could have been hiding some, there were only a few actual bare spots. But still figured I'd pick something up.
bummer for me too, I put about 40+ hours in the endloader this week pushing snow around. will put a hault on my shed hunting for awhile after 17 inches of snow or whatever they said we got....
Picked 3 dinks yesterday, so that puts the shedometer at 7. All left sides, and one was steaming fresh. Still a little too much snow and lots of bucks still packing. If nothing else, I'm confirming that the deer are where I thought they should be... Get after 'em, boys.
Well done Fran, they have been working me alot, supposed to been off this weekend but im at work Ill be out soon
Gri22ly you took the poop off the antler! That was one of the best parts in that picture so you should of left it! Nice finds!
Hey guys, haven't been out once since I moved back to Virginia. Trail Camera photos show that the bucks with antlers worth looking for are still holding both sides, so I am going to postpone for shed hunting adventures for at least another week.
Yeah, everytime we start getting bare ground showing, 2-3 more inches just bury everything again. I'll get out sometime soon - it looks like we've got a little warmup coming next weekend. Grizz - Those are two quality pickups. What did that tall-tined 5x tape out to? Looks like a scorer.
2 - 3 inches doesn't bury sheds that bad you sissy !!! Get out there and find some. I've got Friday off and 2 - 3 feet of snow isn't going to stop me. I probably won't find anything but maybe I'll get lucky and trip over one buried in the snow. I can hope. If I stay at home the wife will find jobs for me to do or worse... try to drag me off to town or something horrid like that. LOL Tim
You guys are right . . . a few inches doesn't stop me. BUT, my "numbers" usually come from racking up a couple dozen scrubrack yearling sheds (spikes, forks & 3x's), most of which can be buried under a few inches of powder. So, I've been going out anyway, hitting the known big buck areas, looking for those higher age bracket sheds, but I've largely been coming up empty, with the exception of a couple magnum sets. Yesterday, my buddy and I put on a solid 5 mile hike, cherry-picking our best areas for big sheds, and we got blanked! That's the first time I ever remember that happening. The only rational explanation is that there's a fair number of bucks still carrying. All I can do is keep putting one foot in front of the other, expanding my range, with the radar set firmly on high-percentage sheddy areas. Sooner or later, I'll run into something worth picking up.
Crick where is your white stuff? Mine is going to be melted away by this weekend so I plan on a long walk this weekend! Still have around 8 inches or so but it is in the 40 and will be in 50's by this weekend. Woo Hoo!
