I haven't really been out listening for gobbles but I could hear them all throughout the winter gobbling in both bow season and shotgun season. It was really weird actually, I've never heard them gobbling before at the time. They were only gobbling on the roost, but still interesting. At least I know there are still plenty of turkeys around. Before too long here they should be hitting the fields in the afternoon and hopefully I can get some pictures to show you guys.
i did update you guys on my timeframe, and license deal, right? May 22 - 28? Southern MN. I still have no Idea other than spot, and try to get close. I'm still reading about late season tips.
Opinions needed. This is an area that I am looking at. It is almost 21,000 acres. I know it is going to be heavily hunted by the time I get there, but I just need something. Yes, I will be going down there sometime soon, but since I can't right now, I am looking through this website. Take a look, and let me know what you think? Go down to the "Interactive Cover Type Map" it is below the state pic. http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/wmas/detail_report.html?map=COMPASS_MAPFILE&mode=itemquery&qlayer=bdry_adwma2py3_query&qitem=uniqueid&qstring=WMA0900901
Guys, we don't care if they pop a few more teams into this thing do we? I don't, it's just more for us to dominate, right?
It feels like forever away! I am getting wicked itchy. Good news, winter seems to not want to let go, so maybe my 5th season calls will still be a little effective.
I know what you're saying ipv, it's only a couple weeks away till the opener yet it seems like it's never going to arrive. My dad and I are taking a kid out this weekend for the youth hunt so I should have a pretty good idea on how the flock is doing this year. With being at school I haven't really been able to scout at all or even scope the fields, but the turkeys in our area usually roost in the same spots every year and travel the same areas. I'll let you guys know how the hunt goes this weekend.
I have been seeing a good sized flock in the mornings on the way home from the girl friend's. Unfortunately they are a ways from where I need them to be. I'll have to scout out my other two possible pieces.
The days are rolling for me now. This weekend I will be liming the plots and then shooting 3D on Sunday. The following weekend is the work weekend at the cabin to get the plots planted. The weekend after that is my anniversary and then the one after that is T-DAY. The days inbetween are full with prep for the coming weekends and shooting. My year really feels "started" about this time. April means 3D, food plots and turkey. May means Turkey, 3D, early bass, and river lot season. June, July, is river lot, scouting, and this year FATHERHOOD. August is planting, final set hanging, and glassing, September is final prep. Then we are balls to the wall for 3.5 months. I love it.
Well we weren't able to get a turkey for the kid we took hunting this past weekend. The birds just weren't responding like the usually do. I think the weather may be messing with them some since there is snow on the ground in April. They did get to see several and could hear 6 or 7 different toms on the roost. On Sunday my dad saw around 5 toms the had visible beards from about 100-150 yards away. Hopefully it will warm up in the next week or so and the turkeys will be more responsive when season starts for me.
Is everyone still alive? Season opens tomorrow for me, but I can't hunt due to school. I think I'm going to drive home Wednesday night and hunt Thursday since I don't have classes on Thursdays. If I don't have any luck on Thursday I'm probably going to go home over the weekend as well and see if I can get one on the ground.
Good luck Wed. I am going crazy, but I still have weeks to wait! I went to look for some turkey sign on the small piece I can hunt near my house, but it doesnt look very promising. I'll have to do some scouting this weekend on 2 other pieces that have higher population.
How'd it go??? I've been super busy lately. New job, and I never know when I am going to work. I'm always on call.
I didn't hunt today because I had classes. I'm hunting tomorrow. I'll let you guys know how things go.
