No hunting for me until Saturday. warm front with rain pushing through now. rain is supposed to stop by 5:00 AM on Saturday. This weekend could be good.
Well, said I was going to post a pic of what I saw from the stand, he wandered through about 8:50 and as I have 2 tags I went ahead and removed him from circulation. He weighed about 150 - 170 lbs. The bears are becoming a bit of a nuisance, their numbers are increasing and with the fawn predation they are almost as bad as coyotes on the deer herd around here. When I get the opportunity I try to whack one. I don't like to eat them but I had a friend on the job that likes them and I let him have the meat. Thought that I would have a nice rug made to put in my man cave. If I was ever fortunate enough to kill something 400 lbs or bigger I would have a full body mount done but I would have to keep the price of it from my wife as I have been given a couple of estimates of $2,500 or more. Maybe we can get some bonus points for a bear?
Good job Keith on the bear! I don't know if its just me, but I cant see the pic. If you got any more pics please post them up
Found out yesterday that one of the target bucks that we had been watching and seeing was killed by another hunter. Scored 168. Kinda bummed by that but happy for the hunter.
tough break, but better another hunter than a car or EHD/CWD. I am heading up to MI @ 0-dark-30 tomorrow. I only hung 2 cams down in a section that I've not exactly hunted before. Haven't had a chance to check them since I put them up. Public land being what it is, A) I hope my cams didn't get stolen (1 of my cousin's did about a mile away) and B) I have no idea what buck(s) I'm hunting. Probably first 110+ I see Saturday is supposed to storm pretty bad. I'm pretty sure my wife will kill me for dragging her out in the camper in high winds. If I survive the night (both falling trees and my wife) Sunday is looking nice although a little warm...good wind direction for where I am planning on hunting. Luck to all this weekend. 4g is spotty out there so I might be off the grid for a few days. If I smack one I'll drive up the road and get a signal long enough to post a couple quick pics
Good luck dnoodles! Keep us posted. Who else is getting out this weekend? I will be out, not sure yet if I will be chasing sika or whitetail. As of right now it will probably be sika. If I get one, I doubt it will score over 50" But I've been wanting to get one for awhile.
Would a sika even count for the contest? Do the rules specify species of deer? Technically Elk and Moose are deer...if we can enter those next year my team may be really happy when I get back from my September Elk hunt and post 350 points
cruising around trying to find a new Hawk bow hanger and found this... another one of those "why the heck didn't I think of that" moments.. http://www.cabelas.com/product/HAWK-CINCH-DEER-DRAG/2287612.uts?slotId=11#tabsCollection
where you heading? We're going to CO next year. Not sure what unit yet. I did Idaho OTC/DIY style in 14 and it was the coolest hunting experience of my life. Smoked a nice cow on the 7th day of a 10 day hunt. I'd do Idaho again but it's an extra 2 days of driving that I could be hunting instead; so CO it is.
Colorado. I am building points for some of the better units in WY and NM, so in the meantime I'd like to get few hunts under my belt to get more familiar with elk hunting. I've only gone one other time, in KY of all places. My wife drew an archery tag there in 2014
Yes I believe sika count, I remember either last year or the year before one of the guys from MD put one in the contest, and it counted. The problem is a state record sika wouldn't break 80". I might be heading to Colorado next year also, depends on if I get drawn. I've been putting in since 2011. For one specific unit. My buddy got his tag this year and put down a big 6x6. I'm really trying for mule deer. Last time I was out there I had a few that were pushing 200" but I had no tag. But I was standing next to my buddy when he shot a 188" muley.
Are you serious??? That's like winning the lottery. Literally. I've put in 2 years in a row now. I wish they built preference points. Did you guys drop one? I want a chance at a muley as well. Definitely also dropping the coin on a deer tag when I go out there. Go big or go home! Passing through Wyoming on way out to ID I saw dozens of booners from the road. I almost hit a few of them. Just awesome animals and can't wait to wrap my hands around a set of those big velvet horns.
Well guys I've been hitting the stand hard this week. Seeing tons of deer. Seeing does every night but I don't shoot does out of this stand. Wednesday night I passed on a 140 class 10. I feel guilty for the team but I think I can do better. It felt really good letting him walk at 34 yards broadside but after I felt like I let the team down. I'm hunting a doe stand tonight with this unfavorable ENE wind. I'll try for 50 points tonight.
Hey man shoot what makes you happy! The team aspect is just an afterthought. don't feel guilty for not shooting a buck you would not have been 100% happy with.
Yes guys hunt for your self and what you want to shoot, don't do it because your on the team. That's to much pressure for your self, just have fun. Heck if I get sika this weekend, I'm going to just as proud to post it as any other buck I have shot!
Your not kidding, I'm more excited to shoot a big muley over an elk. I should down load the video I got of this one muley. I was 30 yards from him for over 5 minutes wide open! He had double drop tines and one of them was a club!
I was at full draw with my finger on the trigger and just kept thinking that you can't shoot a booner if you shoot a smaller one first. I know there are bigger ones around.
