well dbl lung I just don't know what to say anymore????? anytime you want to come to PA to shed hunt let me know. man tornados everywhere around our area tonight. didn't sound like anything big hitting.
I'm at a loss as well. I'm looking to rent Leo if he is still available................. Awesome job, dbl lung!!!
I don't do Facebook but I may start a page for my dog. I don't know anyone with a dog more successful. I think he was born this way, has nothing to do with training. The farmer was surprised also. The story of Leo starts in a small family owned grocery store. They had a litter of 7 black lab/retriever from a female golden and a male chocolate lab. My kids, wife and I went to see them but my wife was the hold out. We left without a dog and my kids were heart broken. Keep in mind my kids were 15 and 12 years old. Three days later after speaking with my wife i called to find out that all pups were spoken for. Once again it was ugly knowing what a great deal this would be. The next day I got a call from the owners stating one of the pups had been brought back and I could come take my pick of the 3 that were still at their house. I dropped everything and went and picked the runt of the litter thinking it would be a smaller size full grown. The runt was also the only dog left that ran around with his nose on the ground constantly. I still believe he was the original pup my kids had chosen too. Can you guys believe I only paid $250 for Leo!? Like I said I don't think anything I have done made Leo the shed machine he is. I think he was bred this way and I got lucky picking the right dog.
Talk to a lot of old timers and they will generally tell you that the runt of the litter is generally the best dog. I haven't had my pick of enough litters to verify it personally but it's one of those things I've heard my whole life from people that should have a valued opinion.
Covey has told me this exact thing before!! I'm going to look for the runt now. We had this same type of thing happen when I was younger, a guy my Dad used to work with gave him a Brittany pup as a joke. He was the runt of the litter. Best damn dog my Dad had ever owned.
Well today sucked!3 hours of driving each way and 4 hours of walking and no sheds and it's a few days early for morels.
Growing up we always had yippee poodles. I always said I wouldn't have a dog if I had to have an ankle biter again. So when we decided on a lab i didnt know what i was getting into. It was luck of the draw.
Maybe. Character of the owner makes a big difference as well though. It's funny how when you look at pets, often times they share similar traits with their masters. I've known a lot of people with dogs including two grandpas and a couple of close uncles with hunting dogs and you can always tell by the dog which owners are good owners and which ones aren't, which one's care or not and which one's take time to work and spend time with their dogs.
I have access to a few guided bow hunts in Indiana. Super cheap but does not include lodging or food. Not posting price or details anywhere. If interested message me. Only open to people I know.
I agree. my nephews are bad kids and their dog acts just like the kids. definitely a parenting issue. Indiana? that is a lot less driving for me.
Terry I will get you the info tonight. A lot easier on the computer than trying to send a message from my phone. Or you can text me 763 269 1962.
went out to pull a couple stands and looked around for sheds and turned up nothing. tomorrow is the all day trip.
congrats to you and your son!!! I walked about 8 miles today and not one shed. I did find a couple awesome hunting spots for this fall. the most weird thing is I found about 4 or 5 fresh scrapes. they must have been hit last night or this morning. even fresh break on the licking branch. things really greened up so that was it for that spot. I might have one more spot to check?
He has given me a bunch of great hunting memories already. He has killed 5 turkeys, 5 does, a 130" and a 133" buck and a bear and he just turned 16. I didn't kill anything until I was 18 and I was probably 23 before I killed my first 130" buck. When I first started hunting in Pennsylvania though you shot the first 3" antlered buck you saw.
I'm sure your son is greatful to have a dad to show him the way. he is very lucky to have you! I never got to hunt with my dad so I try to give my son extra attention when doing outdoor stuff. we spent this afternoon shooting the .22. haha!!!! most PA hunters are still brown it's down mentality. it is slowly getting better as the younger hunters are more educated about letting deer grow up some. there are a lot less deer now at least in my area so the drunks and lazy people are quitting. as a result the quality has improved. I am getting pics of bigger bucks then ever before.
