Honestly didn't have crazy high hopes for tonight. Had a doctors appointment that ran late so I was heading to the woods later than I wanted. That coupled with the heat made me think it might not have even been worth it to sit. It's a pretty consistent on the piece of public I hunt that after the first month or so of season, the deer stop being visible in fields and mostly stick to the timber. After my last sit I knew I'd probably have to move off field edges and get deeper in the woods. Checked the wind right before hopping in the car and spent the drive brain storming spots that could work. Like I mentioned earlier, this spot came to mind that I've never hunted but scouted a couple years ago. One of those spots where as soon as you step in, it just screams deer. Comparatively open oak flat coming out of a really thick creek bottom and about 50 yards off a field. This spots a little over 3/4 mile from the nearest parking area so I figured it wouldn't get hit hard. Started hiking in around 1600 and as soon as a hit the trail into this area it was loaded with sign. Worked back off the field edge a ways and set up in the first tree that had clear shooting lanes to the main avenue of travel and a good backdrop. Got fully situated in my stand a little after 1630. The nice part about this spot is you can glass about 100 yards in each cardinal direction. Kept periodically scanning, hoping if this spot doesn't pan out, at least it could serve as an observation sit to dial in the set up for next time. Right at 1800 a glanced up a saw a doe step out at about 40 yards (top right of photo). Noticed right away she had a pretty long head and decent body so I decided if she hit that trail I'd try and take a shot. She wasn't ambling around at all and within 15 seconds she hit that trail (dark spot of bare ground, center right of photo) quartering towards me with no sign of stopping. She kept coming pretty much on a bee line to my tree. I was pretty sure she was about to bust me as I worked up quite a sweat on the hike in and set up. She got to the patch of bushes in the bottom right of the photo and started browsing, obscured by the branches. Came to full draw and she stepped out hard quartering away. Visualized where I wanted the arrow to exit and settled in on my pin, started pulling through the shot and the arrow hit exactly where I wanted. She mule kicked and jumped about 10 feet and as soon as she took a couple steps I could see her whole side covered in blood. Tore off into heavy cover and I lost sight after about 75 yards. Heard her crash maybe 10 seconds after the shot. I knew when I shot her she was close but it happened so fast I didn't realize she was less than 5 yards from the base of my tree. From the time I first laid eyes on her to putting an arrow in her couldn't have been more than 3 minutes. Everything happened so fast I was surprised I was able to stay calm as this is my first deer in over 2 years. Felt good to put one down again. I used the forehead gland to spray on the licking branch and the pre/post rut to put in the dirt. Here’s a pic of all the bucks hitting the Golden Scrape this year. Results may vary but I haven’t had much luck. I have a few that don’t have cams on them so I’ll see here later in October if I kill a buck over a mock scrape
Conquest VS-1 ... spend the money on the original and don't go cheap on the synthetic.... I use it along with evercalm...
VS-1 is liquid spray for the scrape... Ever calm in the stick is used on the licking branch... USE rubber gloves!
Well in the grand scheme of things half a hondo isn't much considering you prolly have over 2K wrapped up in equipment and clothes just to start.... None of then smell like a HOT mama either! LMAO
