My wife used to work in our County Assessors office and while she was there a new Assessor was elected. The new assessor came in and corrected everything that his predecessor had been slacking on and everyone taxes went up.

The best way to look at it is not with how much it costs you now, but rather as how much you have saved over the years that your property was assessed wrong. I know that's not as easy as it sounds but had your property been assessed right, you'd of been paying this years amount all along.

Alaska hammers property taxes as well, although we have no income tax and no sales tax so it washes out in the big scheme of things. Still bites to pay $3700 on a condo valued at $240k.

You boys need to move to NC. I live on 3 acres, house appraised at $178K (4 bed 3 bath), another detached 1000 sq ft "mother in law suite" with full bathroom, kitchen etc, and a in ground pool. My taxes are $1300 a year.

I live in PA and also in one of the cheapest boroughs to live in. I've been on borough council for 10 years and we haven't had a tax increase in at least 20 years.

I have 21 (taxable) acres and all my combined taxes are $1500. We do have 5 acres that are nontaxable as the power lines are there. We just purchased last fall and they did an assessment at $120k (I believe)...but it'll never go higher, despite the work we've done since living here (we had a land contract 3 years prior) - as we're in the middle of no where and a lot of older houses around to deflect our price.

But, we have a volunteer fire department and transport to a local school. It's not a bad place to live - I moved 10 houses down from where I grew up.

Suburb of Milwaukee, one of the better school systems in the area, which is why we moved here about 30 years ago......one quarter (.23) acre, 1800 SF house assessed at 195K, taxes of about $5000. My taxes have gone down a few years ago, I think about 4 years out of the last 7. However, the fair market value of the house is about 250K, even tho they are assessing at 98%.

County has my house assessed at $131k although its worth more like $160k on the market currently and we pay $2200. We live in one of the best school districts in Missouri. I've always wonder what the wage difference is between different areas to be able to afford all of the taxes. On my income and wife staying at home with kids, we are fine but there is no way I could afford to pay NY or IL taxes without significant salary bump.

Reality is most households have both parents working. And the monthly difference between $2.2k and $6k in taxes is $225 or so per month. It adds up, but it's not a ton of money........people make up for it elsewhere.

$3,800 isn't a ton of money? Let me give you my address and you can send me a check.

My residence is in ND. My property taxes are around 1.25% of the assessed value of my home.

Doing the math. I'm at about $19.58 per $1,000 of value. Maybe that is a better comparison for different areas.

That's across the board per $1,000 so multiply that by value and that's what you pay.

I live in Arkansas. We bought our 1600 square foot home for $152K and paid $1300 in property taxes. We actually got a refund from the escrow account for overpayment. For what some of you are paying in taxes at your home's value you own 10-20 acres in Arkansas with house and pay less taxes.

I am of the opinion that property taxes are unAmerican and would have fallen under the founding fathers purview of excessive taxation. People should not pay taxes simply
    for owning property.

I live in one of the worst counties for taxes in Illinois. I'm in a small 1350sq. ft home on literally a tenth of an acre and pay 4k. This house was just to get back on my feet after getting bent over by a horrible ex. I'll be paying closer to 7k when I move to a spot with a couple acres and a pole barn
