My 12 year old son and I just started this sport, I'd like to know what type of target we, as beginners should be using and at what distance should we start at? Do the backstops advertised at Cabella's and Bass Proshops really work?

The target I use is I rinehart rinoblocker its a 130 but its a high class target it heals its self. You can use a target from walmart if you want to. My backstop is a dirt mound you can use hay bails it doesn't really matter as long as you have something behind the target for whin you miss. I am teaching my brother how to shoot a bow and I started him at 15 yards that would be a good starting yardage for new people to the sport. I hope I have helped you

I am also shopping for targets... but not really wanting to spend much as $$ is tight. I found the black hole target for $40... anyone used that one? Right now I am shooting at a chunk of styrofoam. it is only 24"x12 and I can only get one shot at it before I have to set it back up.

So I will continue this discussion and ask if anyone has had any experience with BUDGET targets.

Well, for the money, Yellow jacket makes a broadhead target AND a field poiint target all for around $100... It gives you 2 targets to shoot at as long as you are using field points.. DONT SHOOT BROADHEADS INTO THE BAG TARGET... They will tear it up. This way you can have a target at 15 and a target at 20... Until your shooting gets better.. Good luck

Here is the ultimate "budget" target I use. I go to a feed shop/Southern States and pick up a $2 burlap feed bag. I fill it with old worn out clothes/newspaper, stuff my dogs tear up, old pieces of old targets, etc. Then I just take some spray paint and make little circles on the target. Again, the total cost of that target might be in the $2-$4 and you can have many of them at varying distances. Just a thought.

Edit...you can also make the above targets with stronger dog food bags, grass bags from Home depot and the like....easy and cheapo to the max.

Spray foam insulation in a cardboard box works very well also.

Use a quality bag target for practice and you will save $$ in the long run. Compared to other Archery gear they are a bargain. :)
