In this post I will be reviewing three targets that I have recently purchased. This is by no means a professional and in-depth review...just what I noticed while slinging some arrows. First up, the Morrell Bone Collector Double Duty 400 FPS target. I purchased this target at Bass Pro this spring. I was deciding between this and a Rinehart but opted for this because it was cheaper and I already had an older target for broadheads. First thing I noticed...this thing is heavy. I can't leave my target outside because I live in a neighborhood with small yards and I shoot in a community area near the woods. Lugging this thing out for only a few shots is sometimes aggravating but for extended shooting sessions I don't mind much. The target sides are varied (darts, 9-ball, vitals, and bulls-eyes) to keep shooting interesting. I personally like playing 9-ball. I will try to shoot the balls in order and can't stop until I hit them all with the first shot...really makes for some pressure shooting on that final ball! Arrows from my bow don't even penetrate halfway and arrow removal is as easy as advertised with this target, if not easier. I can remove grouped arrows with one hand no problem. At first, the target was leaving thin fibers/fuzz on my arrows upon removal but that has pretty much cleared up now. The size is nice for longer distance shooting without worrying too much about missing the target on a bad shot. The color/contrast of the target, however, is terrbile for long distance shooting. The yellow and green really blend together once you get over 40 yds. I use orange target stickers and this really seems to help. Also, if you shoot a particular area often, the target/ball you are shooting basically starts to disappear. They do sell replacement covers for this and you can also just slap on a target sticker so it's really not that big of a deal. Overall, I think this is a great fieldpoint target for anyone looking to do plenty of shooting and wants to mix things up a little. As hunting season drew nearer, I decided to shoot fix blades for this season. One day of broadhead tuning basically ruined my old broadhead target so I went shopping for a new one. I was at WalMart and spotted the Buck Commander combo target for $40. I figured I'm just going to tear it up anyway....why spend big money when I can get this cheap one? Again, target was a good size for distance shooting. This target was also much lighter than the Morrell, so it was easier to grab this target for only shooting a few arrows. First I'll talk about the fieldpoint side. Arrow removal varied depending on where you hit. One part of the target I could remove them with one hand and another I had to flip the target over and stand on it while pulling up on the arrow. Target visibility was better than the Morrell, especially when using my green pins. They had two colors, one yellow and one red, I chose the red. Now to the broad head side. This side is black foam with white targets...great for making out the bulls eye at further distances. This side stopped the arrows really well, much better than my older layered broad head target. However, removal of the arrows revealed a deal breaker...each of my shafts had a glue like substance stuck to them about two inches from where the arrow was sticking out the the target and the only thing that would remove it was Goof Off. This was not an issue on the fieldpoint side. So I spun it around and shot it from the other side...same result. I took it back the next day. Overall, this is a terrible target and I would not recommend it to anyone. Still needing a broadhead target I headed to a local bow shop. They carry all the major targets so I figured this would be a great place to find what I needed. After looking at what they had in stock, I was trying to decide on either the Block Black or the Rinehart Rhinoblock XL. I liked the replaceable insert in the Rinehart, but did not like the price. The Block target was $50 cheaper but I wasn't sure of the target's longevity being punished with broadheads so I took a chance and coughed up the dough for the Rinehart. This target was heavier than the Block, but I liked the rope handle better than the recessed handle in the Block so the weight wasn't that big of deal...plus it was lighter than my Morrell! This target has 6 shootable sides and the replaceable core is shoot-able from two of them. I shot fieldpoints first and the target stopped them no problem. Now, I was preparing myself for some struggle to remove the arrows (even bought an arrow puller at the shop) but what a surprise! The arrow is pretty snug at first but comes out no problem. One handed arrow removal is easy with this target. I love how visible the target spots are on this target, very easy to see. If you want to shoot longer distances, use the side with the larger dots, as the rows of smaller dots pretty much blend together from afar. Next came the broadheads. So far I have only shot these into the replaceable core since I spent so much on the target. The target stopped broadheads no problem and arrow removal was easier than with field points. Only put 20 shots with broadheads but the core is already holding up better than my old layered target. This target is way above any of the other targets that I have shot up to this point. I really wish I would have spent the money on this target to begin with because I wouldn't have had to buy any other targets. If you are looking to buy a new target but are hesitating on a Rinehart because of the price...just buy it!! It is well worth the extra $$ over the other targets and they do have cheaper ones than the one I got. It seems like this target will last me a long time and was a great purchase. So....in summation: Morrell Bone Collector Double Duty-Good Buck Commander Combo Target-Poo Rinehart Rhinoblock-Excellent!
Nice review! I just bought my first Rienhart target, the "Woodland Buck" 3D target. I'm very impressed with the quality of Rienhart. The "self healing" foam seems to really be self healing. lol. I've only put one target broad head in it and even though the hole closed up upon removal, it sounded like it was tearing $*it inside. I think I'll be sticking with field tips only with this target.
Hi I have just brought the Rhinehart woodland buck. It is a well made target for the money. I have only shot it about 30 times but the arrows are easy to pull and the vitall area can be replaced. Great target Dogfox
