On the show i often hear talk about one stand being good for the wind and another not. Fill me in, is the focus simply not to have the wind at your back? Not to have it drifting your scent over the bedding or feeding area? "aka where you expect the deer to come from" I am self taught been hunting for 6 years and have one small doe under my belt. I must be doing something wrong, granted im hunting public land in SE wisconsin but still.

While on the subject of weather, At what point do you all leave the stand? What amount of wind rain or even snow do your chances decrease making it not worth being cold, wet or miserable?

You never want your scent to be blown to the deer. That is why you try and set up to where the wind is blowing from them to you or even a cross wind

Like b_walte15 said, do your best to keep your scent from being blown towards the way the deer normally come in. I have learned that your best hunting a lot of times comes after a storm front has just passed through. The deer will get up on their feet and walk. Normally on a cold windy day the deer will bed down to try to keep warm. On a really cold day, they will be up looking for food. You have to be best prepared for the weather as you possibly can. True you can't kill them from the couch, but you can get the best gear you can afford to make the weather extremes more tolerable.

My husband helps me choose a stand based on wind, but I use scent control products as well. Many a time I've had doe come in behind me. I've also had them circle around me. Scent control helps reduce your chance of getting busted.

Wind is tricking, but the key to killing big deer consistently. I used to gamble and hunt some stands on questionable stands. The older and more experienced I get the more patience I have to wait for the absolute right time to capitalize on certain stands.....
For me is not so much having the wind in my face as it is know where my scent cone is going. ie if possible have the wind blow out over fields or areas where the deer don't typically travel. Wind is tricky but set your stands for the prominent wind direction for the time of season you'll be out. I too hunt se wisconsin. Watch episode 13 season 4 and you'll see my wife and I get busted by "buster". The wind was out of the north at our back blowing mostly over the soybeans. It happened to swirl a bit when that buck was walking towards us. He did a lip curl......where he scented us....Didn't like what he smelled and he disappeared . Keep at it you'll figure it out. Hope it helped! Good luck!
