I just got off the phone with my son in law.

It looks like there won’t be any deer hunting this season or any other season on the property they are renting.

They just found out today that the landlord who owns the parcel is going to clear all the timber around the house my daughter is renting, dam up the creek and make a 25 acre lake there. The timber clearing is scheduled to begin the second or third week of September.

Not only will it eliminate all of the wooded area but it will also reduce the lease agreed 10 acres of pasture to about 3 acres.

The owner is also planning to convert the lease agreed barn my daughter is using for her horses to a “boat slip” building.

They still have a year left on their lease also.

It’s a real kick in the nuts to my son in law who has put so much work into making the pastures useable and the woods huntable.

I don't recall...is this in Kentucky? If so, " lease agreed" must be a loose contractual term (regardlessof lication).

The only disadvantage to me is that I won’t get a chance at Ghost or Captain Hook.

I’m sure I’ll kill some deer.

I’m more concerned about what this will do to my daughter and son-in-law.

I can't remember how big of a parcel it is/was, but they can't take it all down at once can they?

Maybe try to come to a mutual agreement, work on one area and leave another alone until no other choice.

I've hunted land after logging and during neighboring logging and also had a power line being decommisioned once.

Deer get used to things quick and stay just far enough away but still frequemt the area, esoecially with fresh browse being laid down after a hot and dry summer

Sounds something that should have to pass an environmental review muster ....

While it sucks as a hunter and as a tennant, put yourself in the property owners shoes he is creating his vision he has on the property he owns.

You'll embrace the logging mere days after they're done in an area, deer will love it as well depending on how it is being left, how aggressive...the timing isn't ideal for regrowth but hold on to your hats next year come spring green up.

You'll get no argument from me on that point. Even my son in law understands that point. The timing is really bad, and less than a month's notice seems totally inconsiderate.

The only aspect of this that really irritates me, though, is my daughter having to scramble to figure out what to do with her five horses.

Normally I'd agree, but if all goes according to plan then come this time next year the entire area that's being logged will be underwater.

I keep thinking the same thing. I'm assuming no-one would begin a project like this without having the proper permits.

As it just so happens, I have been doing a lot of online scouting of the public land pieces between Henry County and Lebanon in preparation for my plan to hunt MO this year. I think I have identified several good spots that are probably within an hour of that area. I haven't been there in person, but I would be happy to share the info since you tried to put me on that buck you found in Arkansas last year.

    I appreciate that Adam.

I’m definitely not hurting for places to hunt, though. I actually have more places to hunt in Kentucky than I have time to get to.

Don’t forget that you have a standing invitation to hunt here where I live in Missouri also. We have some great public land very close to where I live. I just didn’t have time last season to really focus on it.

I appreciate that, I have looked at places in your area as well. Missouri has way more public land opportunities than I thought.

Maybe I misread but didn't you say the plan is only 25 acres will be underwater?

Honestly, I'd have to see the plans myself to know for sure. I do know from looking at the satellite image that the parcel Josh and Heather live on is about 40 acres, but there are only about 25-30 acres of woods, which is all in the lower-lying areas in the vicinity of the creek.

The plan is to have the timber harvested/clear-cut beginning the second or third week of September. As soon as the clear cutting is complete they will start the dirt work for the lake.
