I'm taking my Dad with me to a farm where I took four does last year and Matt got one... nothing more than a wide fencerow really, but it's got a huge block of timber several hundred yards away that deer dump out of and come over to the land I have permission to be on.... Crop rotation is different this year, so not sure how it'll pan out but we're gonna give 'er a shot. I can't wait til Dad gets to draw down on his very first deer! He's obviously the reason I'm so fanatical about hunting, though he never bowhunted a day in his life. We grew up in SE Missouri where the land was as flat as you could see, and the crop rotation was watermelons and cotton. We always kept a couple beagles though, and literally -- no exaggeration -- put thousands of rabbits in the freezer as I grew up under his tutelage. Before rabbit season opened in the fall, we spent every weekend night paddling down a moss-infested ditch going after huge croakers. Man, I sure do miss all those fresh messes of frog legs! It sure is a pleasure to hang stands these days for Dad... hope to get him on one soon.
Good Luck...spent some good nights Froggin' with my dad & buddies growing up...plan on re-kindling the tradition with my sons once they are a little older - I've already discussed with them and they bring it up on occasion... Owe my hunting addiction to my dad as well...good luck to yours this season!
Just sharing that time with your dad makes your hunt a success before you ever get in the woods. Good luck putting the icing on that cake!
Well, we weren't fortunate enough to put him on any deer tonight; the farm I went to had completely the wrong crop rotation... beans, beans and more beans... everywhere. I walked way down a fencerow on the other side and ended up having a fawn button buck come to within 6 feet... broadside, looking back at the other 10 deer standing in the cut corn field 250 yards away he'd just left. Would have made a PERFECT target for Dad (He's all about the tender meat, too :D) Need to jump around a bit and find some more corn. It's ALL about the corn! Thanks for the comments guys; it indeed is pretty special getting to take Dad out... paying him back for 1/1,000,000th of what he did for me growing up.
It is great that you are getting to spend quality time with your dad. I can't wait to see pics/read the story when he connects on one.
