So I was in my back yard and shot some grim reapers in a bag target. The blades twisted, broke off, and disappeared in the bag. Has anyone here shot these at a deer??? How did they do and did I just get a bad batch. I have heard nothing but great reviews about these but I am weary to pack them for this years hunt.
I shot a doe with one last year and it went about twenty paces and fell over dead. But two years ago, my brother -in-law shot a really nice buck in the shoulder with one. We looked for two days and never found that deer. So, I dunno. Blessings......Pastorjim
You were shooting them at a "bag" target? If so it's no wonder the blades were breaking off. The material inside a bag target is going to compress and be much, much harder on a broadhead than a deer would be. I shot Grim Reapers for three years and I can honestly say that every single shot I took on a deer went through the animal and any damage to the broadhead came from it burying in the dirt after passing through. As I've said before, if they made them super sharp I'd still be using them.
Thank you for the comments!! I did not know that about bag target vs. a deer. This will be my first year with deer so maybe I over thought the situation.
No problem. Shoot the Reapers at a block target or other foam target and you'll find that they hold up quite well. I still say that they're one of the best designed mechanical heads out there. Something else: If you stick with Grim Reapers, once you determine that they are hitting the same point as your field points there's no need at all to keep practicing with them. Practice with field points and when hunting time comes put the Reapers on. Just make sure to spin-test them after you put them on. Even the low profile of a Grim Reaper can steer your arrow off course if it's not perfectly aligned with the arrow. Good shooting!
i have shot a doe and it ran maybe 40 yards and piled over.....they make a practice head and i think it comes with the broadheads because they were getting that complaint
I heard that expandable's flew like field points and I wanted to see for myself. I spent $20 on a bag target at ****s sporting good because I knew they would tear it up. Was not expecting the target to eat my blades, but now I know that they do fly like field points.
I shot a doe at 75 yards with a bow tech at 68lbs using a gold tip arrow and a 100 grain grimreaper and blew threw both shoulders, dont believe i can post tha video !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!she went 10 yards! I have shot six deer with them now and they have not gone over 30 yards ,but a muzzy comes in second!!!!!!!!!!!!! Its all bout where u hit tha deer, and i found tha the grims with the 2 inch blades r not as good for deer huntn but work well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THATS THA BEST THING IVE HEArd!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thats tha best thing ive heard grims r tha best
Love em I just shot my first deer ever tonight with grim reaper it passed through on an angle as the deer was close from a stand 15 yrds bit of a gut shot but on the exit it almost cut the hind leg off. The deer ran maybe 50 yrds and died. They work and are devastating. The damage to the back leg alone would have killed it.
