After the run of luck I had in Kansas with the Bow, I decided to hang it up for the year, or atleast until I could get it restrung and sighted in for bullheads. I lost two wounded birds and hit a third one square in the body where the wing meets the feathers, and for the life of me can't exactly figure out what happened next. Long story short the bird walks away unscathed from the field, 4-5 feathers were out there, and my arrow was buried up 20 yards past the bird in the dirt with no blood anywhere. All of this was captured on film. Fun times for archery turkey hunting, but I was anxious to get back and use the shotgun in KY. Got back in time for our opening weekend here, and had a great weekend. On birds every day and finally called one in late Sunday evening, the 18th. Set up on a wooded ridge, got him fired up and sealed the deal with purring and scratching in the leaves...he trots over and peaks out from about 20 yards away, game over. 19 lbs, 9" beard, 7/8" spurs. 2-3 yo Tom, the curve in the hooks makes it hard to judge for sure. Did Some filming/hunting over the next week and a half and we laid down some awesome footage. Nearly everyone on Team Covert has tagged out and It's my turn back up to bat, which worked out nicely this past Wednesday, the 28th. Dave went along with me to try and film me fill my second tag, and we did just that. Got it all in HD, and a cool storyline to boot, but the bird had beard rot. We knew it had only a 4" beard coming in, but I elected to shoot it anyway as a Tom is a Tom to me, and you can't beat wild turkey breast! This bird was quite a bit larger, weighing in at 23 lbs, 4" beard (likely around 10 before it broke off), and 3/4" spurs. HEFTY two year old by the looks of it. Tagged out on film! Now I am trying to iron out plans to try and make it back out to Kansas to fill those two tags I still have before their shotgun season comes to a close in the end of May. Hoping to go mid month for a 4 day trip. All hinges on how the birds are acting out there and if I can line up a cameraman to tag along. Anyone else having a good spring? I lost count, but I think we are up to 17 or 18 birds on film this spring!
Nice Job! Are dang season doesnt come in til this weekend. Really late compared to most states. I did call in two long beards for my nephew last weekend for the Junior season. He missed both, one at 30yds and one at 34yds.
Sounds like a nice season! I think we are up to 15 birds on film now, so we arent having quite as good of a season as you guys haha
Beard rot sucks! My first and biggest turkey so far was a 24.5 lb tom that had 1.25" spurs, but the dang thing only had about a 2 inch beard. I still got it mounted, but it sure would look a lot better with an 11 or 12" beard hanging there. Congrats on the birds! They'll eat real good!
Nice looking birds Trevor. I really like that second picture, awesome background Where do you hunt at in Kansas? We're headed up there the 13th-17th to chase birds on my cousins place (North of Topeka)
I went w a buddy who hunts NW Kansas the first go around, but right now I'm actually lookin for a place to go on a solo return trip. Probably goin to an area right outside of Kansas city for easterns this time
