I hunt on a 40 acre plot near the edge of a 2 mile x 2 mile swamp area. The land that I have traversed outside of this 40 acres has cedar swamp areas, streams, hardwoods groves and tall grass prairies. The past 3 years, I have hunted this property quite heavily. I have found that the deer seem to be nomadic. There are very few heavily traveled routes, and when I hunt near one, I usually end up watching deer travel everywhere but the trail I'm on. I have hunted over some scrapes, significant rub areas, major stream crossings, and the corner of the property near the soybean field in early season. I never really have repeatable success, unless the soybeans are still in the ground and they are heading to/from the food source. In order to increase my chances of encountering one of the big bucks this year, I bought a tree sling to increase my mobility. I also plan to put in a small no-till food plot and some apple trees. I'll probably set up a couple mock scrapes as well. I should note that this is in a herd control unit and from my experience, the buck-to-doe ratio supports this DNR classification. I'm curious if anyone has experience with seemingly nomadic deer behavior and how to adjust my hunting methods to find the big bucks.
get on blood brothers website and buy hunting marsh bucks dvd, it'll prob take several times of watching it to absorb all the info but it will truely increase your odds.... always play thermals, moon phases, and weather fronts also. You may be in hot spots but may not be seeing shooters due to location on the above scenerios. Setting up on leeward wind sides of swamps and in transition areas is key, but if your over hunting it then the deer just have you patterned. Good luck this year, hope this helps
Or you can go to The Hunting Beast and get help directly from the guy that is the brains behind that video. He will also help you figure out a specific property for free. He is to swamps and marsh's what Gri22ly is to hill country.
