Any of you guys have any tips on how I can get a better surprise release with my wrist strap finger release? I have it set up from videos I have seen on YouTube from John Dudley and other archers but I feel like no matter how hard I pull my back elbow It wont go off. Not sure what I could be doing wrong? If I shoot by pulling the trigger I can shoot accurately but want to get the surprise release down.

The more surprise you want, the less of a hair trigger you would want. Make sure your release is set to take a little more pressure on the trigger. Then just like a rifle, it is a squeeze not a pull.

So its not so much a surprise shot like a thumb release would be since its a wrist strap index finger release?

It is difficult to say without knowing what release you are using. Some wrist releases are hard to adjust to get the correct length for a surprise release to occur. I have found that the trigger needs to be back in the hand so that the index finger will drop over the trigger at the second knuckle forming an "L". Then, as back pressure is applied (actually a squeezing of the shoulder blades) the trigger is moved rearward causing the release. Adjust the trigger tension to get the "feel" that is right for you. I use a Scott release similar to the "Samuri" model sold today. It is around 12 years old and still works great. Done correctly, your trigger finger will never feel like it pulls the trigger. Takes some practice, makes the shot more enjoyable and more accurate.

Im shooting a Tru fire hardcore max, I have it set up that my index finger is touching the trigger on the second knuckle like you said. I can adjust it anyway so I will try to change the tension. It seems to have a small amount of play from where I can pull the trigger back and from where it fires.
