Does anyone have any experience/tips with surf fishing and crabbing? The family and I are headed to the Outer Banks (Hatteras) this June. I have zero saltwater experience but want to try my hand at surf fishing. Really just want to sit on the beach, drink a few beers, and wait for something to bite. What all do I need?

Also, has anyone done any crabbing with a surf rod setup and a crab snare?

We have summer house in NJ (lavallette)...so north of you. That time of year your likely to be able to hit some fluke off the surf as well as smaller snapper blues. Not sure about the crabbing off the surf, but some back water bays I am sure you will be into them. We start crabbing in mid July out our way. Some surf fishing forums will keep you up to date on whats available that time of the year in NC...as well as Goggle searching local bait and tackle shops near by...many post weekly and daily update online with catches and conditions.

Hey Finchy...ill be in Duck NC in June too. What week you going?

My experience, the beaches are usually a little too crowded to surf fish in June unless its morning or evening. We pretty much just drink.

When we do fish, we catch alot of little stuff, oh and this:

Were going back down to the outer banks in September for fishing, looking for sharks then,

We'll be there June 15-22 in Hatteras. It shouldn't be as crowed there, hopefully. Pretty sweet video. Loved how the people standing 20 feet away were still acting afraid. :D What kind of rod/reel setup do you guys use? I hardly ever saltwater fish so I don't need to go all out but don't want it breaking on the 1st cast either.

Really excited to try the crab snare....

You can probably get a decent rod and reel combo from ****s or a similar outdoor store for under $75, it will be good enough to last you the week or so you're out there. Not sure what kind of bait they use down there, but that's something you're best checking out with the local bait shop where you're staying. You're best off buying the rigs, hooks, bait from them and they'll give you the low down on whats being caught and what they're being caught on. As far as crabbing, I've never tried that surf rig, but it looks pretty sweet. We usually use hand lines with chicken or bunker in the back bays, it's always a fun way to pass the time and drink some beers.

Get yourself an inexpensive (<$75) rod preferably 9ft at a minimum. The added length will help cast the bait out past the surf break. As Siman said, the beaches are too crowded in June to fish during the day but you don't wanna fish that time anyways. Evenings are best and you can't beat sitting back and drinking a beer after a day in the sun. While you're down there, find the closest bait shop. Not a big sporting goods store, but a small bait shop to get the correct licenses and ask what is hitting and what people are using for bait. I've always found that's the source for the best info. I've used this strategy from MD all the way down the FL. They'll be able to set you up with sinkers, swivels or anything else you might need. If you want to prep beforehand find some local fishing reports on the internet and do some research.

I have quite a bit of experience with surf fishing for Stripers in NY, NJ and Florida but not the crabbing . Get yourself some big rods and some heave 2+oz and up weights. I would suggest you get a Penn prevail, its a great rod with a great price. A bucket to sit on and pvc rod holders to steak in the sand are also good to have. What will you be fishing for mainly?

Pierce rod and reels are good for the price. I know flounder and Bluefish should be plentiful on the beach the times you are going so those can be possible targets and possibly some big red drum and black drum. I suggest using braided line with a mono or floro leader. Buy plenty of snaps and swivels because you can loose a lot sometimes.
