    get bait
    get rods
    catch fish

But seriously. Check for permits. Lots of beaches require permits to surf fish. Bring a cast net to catch your own bait. Watch the birds.

What Hooker said plus check the regulations for the beach as well regarding driving on it. Lots of places require reducing tire PSI to a set level, having a tow strap, 4'x4' plywood, etc.. I always find the closest bait shop no matter where I am and ask questions. They'll know better than anybody and will often times offer advice in addition to what you asked.

Your best bet would be to swing by a local bait shop near the beach you'll be fishing. You'll want to pick up whichever rig targets the fish that is being caught that particular time of the season.
