Hi everyone. I am totally new to the forum and fairly new to bow hunting. I am from Newfoundland, Canada.....and bow hunting opportunities are very rare as you only get a big game (Moose or Caribou) roughly every three years. Anyway, I was fortunate enough to take my first moose with my bow last Sunday. It was a 48 yard shot, the moose went exactly 20 yards and fell over! Couldn't have went any better. I am using a Diamond Provider with 70 Lb draw weight, Easton Carbon Aftermath 340 Arrows tipped with 100 Grain Slick Trick broadheads. I am clueless as to the insert wight and nock weight. My local Archery shop set me up and that's all I know. My question is, what arrow, broadhead, insert, nock setup would you all recommend for moose hunting?? You are the pros, not me lol. So I'd love to hear all your suggestions.
Nice Job!!! New Foundland is one of my bowhunting destinations!! I love everything about hunting on the rock. And the people there are second to none. You absolutely can not find nicer people anywhere.
I have no input on the arrow set up - you appear to be a stone cold killer! I had some friends do a moose hunt up your way a couple years ago and I was blessed to be able to eat some of that moose. Very good table fare! Not a lot of moose in Eastern Nebraska...
Glad you had to opportunity to try some of their moose. Newfoundland is an awesome place, but I wish we had more hunting opportunities like whitetail deer. There aren't any deer on the island. We can hunt two black bears every year and if you are lucky, you can get selected in the draw for either a Moose or Caribou tag every two - three years.
I have moose hunted Newfoundland four times and caribou hunted once. I try to go every other year or third year at most. I have seen a couple black bears over the years and been thinking about doing a spring bear hunt there if I can find the right place
First, Congrats on the moose! Is there a reason you're are questioning your arrow setup? You have a dead moose, but are you unhappy with how the arrow performed? No pass through, poor penetration, stuff broke, etc. No expert here especially with moose. I'm just curious
My arrow did break off 3.5" from the broadhead, but I'm ok with that. I've just been doing a lot of reading about arrows and weight and everything else....maybe I'm reading too much lol.
we all do that, I think its fun, costly.... but fun. Read these forums and you'll find a handful of posts/threads of all us questioning the same thing.
Not uncommon for any arrow to break off, especially if the arrow is stuck in the animal and arrow hits a tree, etc. Did you get a pass through or did the broadhead hit the offside leg or shoulder? Don't mind all the questions, just trying to kill some time at work, lol
Lmao...I hear ya! The arrow hit the opposite side shoulder...he was quartering away from me when I took the shot. Maybe it cracked off when it hit the shoulder...whatever the case may be, I still got em' lol.
That is likely why the arrow broke which is probably normal. Sounds like you made a well place shot and the arrow did its job.
I am no moose expert by any means, I have only killed four. Here is what think are sensible minimums. I should also preface it by saying compared to elk, moose aren’t especially tenacious. Here is goes. 475 grain TAW with True COC head is sensible minimum. Especially for shorter draw lengths and lower < than 65 draw weights. If your pulling More weight I think any fixed head of moderate size will work okay. If I was going to use a mechanical head I would say 70 plus pound and 500 grain TAW minimum with a smalle cutting diameter mechanical head, 1.25 three blade or 1.5 two blades heads. My last two moose were take with 480 TAW Grain Arrow,100 grain Soilds. And most recently a 525 grain arrow with 100 grain IW
Can you tell me what TAW and COC mean lol? Like I said, I'm far from a bow pro and am not familiar with all the lingo...pardon my ignorance. I am using a 70 Lb draw weight Diamond Provider Bow. Where I live, it's a seven hour drive to get to an Archery Shop, and with Archery not being common around here, my choices are limited unfortunately.
