    Hello,

I am trying to get into compound bow hunting but I don't want to put a ton of money into it until I know that I enjoy it enough and will have adequate time to practice before I really put the investment into it. I have my grandfather's PSE Spyder which has probably not been shot in close to 20 years. Assuming that I need to replace the strings and cables, is this an adequate bow to start with? Anything I should know or take into consideration with this bow?

    Thanks in advance.

you could (should)get new strings and cables if you're going to shoot that PSE, would guess if you shopped around you could find that for $150? Before that I would have a shop look it over to confirm nothing wrong with it (cracks etc). You asked if it is an adequate bow to start with, it was adequate to kill deer 15-20 years ago, deer didn't get body armor since then.

Or you could go buy a couple year old used bow at a local shop for$300-500 that probably has a sight and rest on it.

When I was in your position in about 2011/12 I went to a local shop and they let me shoot EVERYTHING in my price range. You'd be surprised how with a good shop while shooting bows how much you'll learn about shooting/form, especially if you're honest with them about being new.

If you buy a bow, I would avoid one of those "this bow will fit you from 5-70 pounds and 10-30 inches of draw"
I know someone that has one, and I'd just avoid it.

I'm shooting a 2014 model year old bow that I bought used. A bow does not have to be brand new and $1,500 to be a good bow, also know if you invest maybe just a little more $ into your set up the chances of enjoying it go up. This might be a "more expensive is better" mindset, or maybe its just a nicer bow.

Great answer, and I appreciate your run through of the options. I will definitely consider the used bow market as well. Especially considering your statement of having better equipment leading to a more likely outcome of enjoying it.

I would just shop around and go to a local archery shop and shoot some. They will help you find something. So many good options these days.

I just bought my first bow in about 20 years. I went to a bow shop and he was great. That day I shot everything from a $450 bow to a $1800 bow.
I went home and watched some videos on youtube to see what to look for. I didn't want to buy a cheap one and then next year want to upgrade.
I ended up spending $1500 total. Thats bow, sight, dozen arrows, release, quiver, stabilizer. Everything ready to go. I went last year with a crossbow and wanted to use a compound bow this year. I loved it last year.
    Hoyt Torrex XT
    Trophy Ridge React 5H sight
    QAD arrow rest
    Trophy ridge quiver
    Trufire Hardcore Buckle Release
    A dozen arrows

I think I got a good deal and I love the way it shoots. Cant wait to get in the woods.
    Good luck
