In 2001 I shot a 3.5 year old, again in 04 and 07. I did shoot 2.5 year olds in 00, 03, 05 and 06. Since 2000, 02 was the only year I ate my tag. I was targeting a certain buck and nothing else would do. I saw him twice and never again. I've never passed a buck that I've seen again. I don't have the land to manage although I try. If we're not part of the solution, we are part of the problem but I will take a 2.5 if he's right and the hunt is memorable. I also do pass 2.5's on a regular basis but towards the end of the season, the bologna must be made and prior to last year, I didn't bother with doe tags as I didn't hunt an area that needed doe to be taken.
Thanks Schultzy.... I know I am gonna whack something this year....just don't know when or where yet.
So far every year I enter a Contest, which is 06 & 07. I did shoot a buck in Gun Season in 06 though. I thought about not enterring this year, but I know the 2 are merely coincidence. There is also the fact that I have previously set my sights perhaps at the top end of my lands buck producing ability. Something I'll be less critical on this year!
The last 9 years running, I've killed a buck with my bow. Now, I've eaten an Illinois non-resident tag 3 years running, and 3 late season tags in Iowa. If it was simply a matter of "filling" a tag - that would be easy. But I'm not into killing for the kill. If I'm not excited to kill something, he lives another year!
