I knew Saturday morning would have the deer up and moving early. I decided to ground hunt with a blind, so I made sure to get out 2 hours early to set up. Once I got settled I was the root of my own problem. At about 10 min after daylight I picked up my phone to check the time. Once in had the phone in my hand I browsed Twitter for a moment and chatted with a couple friends. It was at that time I saw the buck I have been chasing all season stroll past without acknowledging my presence. He never slowed down, and never presented a clean shot. What irritates me the most is that if I had been paying attention I would have seen the deer walking in the clear for at least 50 yards. I'm going out again in the morning (hopefully he is moving again after the rain). I don't plan to touch this stupid phone. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I had that happen last year when a basket 8 walked right by at 3 oclock in the afternoon. Was enough of a lesson that anything can happen at any moment.
I too am a victim of not paying attention. I was gun hunting this past weekend, and as I stood up to stretch I saw shadows, then 3 big does running 10 yards from my blind. I only had one more shot at a doe all weekend and missed. Horrible trip:11 hunters, 3 days, 2 shots taken but NO kills. Worst trip there in ages. I need to pay more attention!
Some times its hard it seems like if I'm not paying attention is when the deer come in but when I am paying attention I don't see anything. So if I'm on my phone in the woods I might look at it for 15-20 seconds and then I look up for a minute or two and then look at it again but now I just try to stay off of it all together
I do anything I can to physically / mentally stay in the stand. It's going to happen if you play with your phone enough. I'd rather do that then nod off to sleep. Pull a few all day sits back to back and you need all the help you can get. You can dink with your phone and still be aware of what's going on around you if you go about it the right way. I've tried doing the same reading a book and it is impossible...
