I used to have some of those field points that were made for "stump shooting" but they didn't work very good. My arrow shaft would get damaged whether I shot a stump or clump of grass. I want to get out in the woods and I like the idea of taking my bow and shooting a bit. Does anyone here do this sort of thing and what do you use? I also thought about taking a target with me to set up once in a while as I walk around scouting. Ideas?
The main idea of the stump shooting tips is to stop your arrow better, not to protect your arrow. When I stump shoot I look for fairly rotten things to shoot at as a rule. No matter what you will damage some arrows sooner or later. That's why I shoot carbons out of my recurve... They offer a little more durability. Keep stump shooting though and leave that target at home you have the right idea it's great practice.
That's no good!! I've been stump shooting for 30 years and can't say I've wrecked allot of arrows but yeah I've wrecked a few here and there (green stumps and tree's). Depending on the weight of tip you need there's a few options out there. Back when I shot a 125 grain tip I used Judo's. These are my favorite but they don't make these In a heavy enough grain for my arrow that I use now. These are the ones I use now. They gotta be tougher on the arrow being they don't give like the Judo's do but I haven't wrecked an arrow yet but I could see It happening. I'd use the other ones If you can. There better anyway when It comes to finding your arrow.
Steve: You can get 125gr. glue on judos......and make up the weight with weighted adaptors. "Stump" shooting, for me, is a mis-nomer. I RARELY shoot at an actual stump. Rarely. Quickest way to wreck an arrow I can think of.
