LOL They've been doing that for centuries. But now they just wait and get jobs as lobbyists once they are out of office.

Question: Does the government paying for your education from grade 1 thru 12 reek of socialism?

Both my parents worked and paid taxes everywhere we lived. My father was in the Marine Corp and my mother would get a job wherever we landed. We paid county taxes. The government did not pay for my education. The homeowners including my parents in each county in which I lived paid for my education, not the government.

Who paid the teachers that taught you? Who built the school? and so on. The government did, maybe not the Federal government but it was the government using tax dollars. Is it different if it is County and not Federal?

The tax payers funded all of those things you mentioned above. The government was merely facilitating a system it created.

By the way Bruce, I appreciate the dialogue. You don't get upset and present some valid points. I appreciate your honesty.

The tax payers would fund the college education, the government would just be facillitating a system it created LOL.

Everyone learns from good, rational debate. I have also appreciated our congenial back and forth very much.

Many colleges are private. The government did not create nor does it maintain those colleges. Hell, if I were those colleges I would pump up my tuition rates. Students who figured they would become public servants and the like would not give a darn if they had to pay say for example, $75,000 a year...because after 10 years that money would be forgiven by the supreme dictator of our land, the president himself via a law.

First, 6.8% compounding while I am in school is not what I would consider "low interest", especially given the going rates lately. The tax payers are not footing any bill unless I default on the loans, that is how that works, US Bank has loaned me the money for school, which the school gets directly and then if there is any left I get that for living expenses. Then, if and only if I default does the US Taxpayer incur any cost at all. That is the premise of an "Un-Subsidised" loan. If it were Subsidised then you'd be paying the interest until I graduated and until six months after and began making my own payments. So don't you go worrying about your tax dollars just yet mister.

Second, I said that government employees are the laziest bunch of workers. I in no way specified. It was a generalization. Have you been to a DMV Office, the US Post Office, the Social Security Office, or any other local, state, or federal office? Crap it takes an act of congress just to get anything done. As for knowing police officers, I have a brother in the King County Sheriffs, a good friend of mine is a Racine Police Officer in Racine, Wisconsin. I know full well why they wear ballistic vests. As for teachers, and have had to deal with plenty of them. Look at what they are dealing with in Milwaukee County Wisconsin.

Again, I will say that I do not agree that we should give ANYONE a free education, and that we should incorporate merit pay into government jobs to draw in more competent employees. Don't get you panties in a bunch, I am not ripping on anyone in particular, just government employees in general.

    Is nothing sacred, anymore?

Why does anyone think the US Gov't. belongs in this arena?

It scares me to think of all the debt people are in for trying to go to school. I'm in my first year of college and luckily this year didn't cost me anything. I'm very fortunate in that aspect. Before my education is over though, I'm anticipating I will have to borrow SOME money. Who knows!

Keep it as low as you can. If you live at home that is great and if your parents can or will help at all take full advantage of that too. Good luck in school, study and keep your grades up, you are paying for it, right?

My wife and her brothers ALL paid for their college expenses via student loans. They knew the financial burden that was involved prior to going to college, accepted it, and now pay for their education. Is it that simple or am I looking at things incorrectly?

It is never "that simple" however the trick is to borrow as little as possible. But yes, some of us work through college, some have parents that pay fro it, and others have to use loans, grants ans scholarships to do it. Regardless of how you pay fro it, it is an investment in your future. College is expensive and getting more so each year, and there is no way to curb the increase in tuition. Paying for it will continue to be a challenge to those that desire to attend.

Being a federal government employee I would have to agree with this for the most part. I cannot believe the work ethic some of the people I work with have. I cannot just sit around all day and do nothing, that is just the way I was brought up. You did describe the majority of the workers though and it is sad that I cannot argue against you for that.

It is sad. My father worked in the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 35 years, and hated the fact that it was so darn tough to get a crew to get a job done. It took him many years to let it go and just go to work and do his job regardless of what others wanted to to or not do.

Yes I am paying for it. I still live at home as well. My parents or grandparents aren't really in a position to help me financially, but my first year I was able to have everything paid for through grants and scholarships. I would say before I graduate, I will end up having to use some student loans but I guess I'll cross that bridge when I get there.

Mad and whitetail--I have been working for the county government for the past 4 years and see many of the same things you all described above. People just holding on to positions they should have been fired/demoted from years ago.

I was also a special education teacher for 6 years. I met some wonderful, hardworking people in the special education department.
