How many of you are familiar with the Mountain Cur breed of hunting dog?

A friend of mine was hunting Chickasaw State Forest in Tennessee this past weekend. There is a stray Mountain Cur female that has started hanging around our campsite. She's a brindle so she's pretty cool looking. My friend drove around and managed to find out that it has been in the area for quite a while and doesn't belong to anyone.

After a lot of "convincing" by his wife, he tried to put it in the back of his truck to bring it home, but it kept jumping out. He wouldn't put it in the cab because it's infested with fleas.

My friend ended up leaving it there yesterday but left a good supply of dog food and water. I'm going there this weekend along with Aaron21, and we're taking my big dog crate, some food and a dose of K9 Advantix to help with fleas.

My plan, if she's still there, is to get the dog into the crate, which is an extra large (big enough for our Great Pyrenees), and then put the crate in the truck and take it to my friends house. I'd take the dog myself, but we have seven dogs right now; five of our own and we're dog-sitting my sons two labs because he's deploying to Saudi Arabia this month.

I just know that there's no way I could just leave a dog in the middle of a state forest to fend for itself.

What can I say? When it comes to dogs, yep, I'm definitely soft.

Let's talk about cats, though.....

I think it is great! I wanted to take home a bear dog that found us in the woods and was such a sweet dog - but we were able to find the owner. So, no dog for me :(

I wish your son a safe trip, and thanks for his serving the country.

I currently have a 1/2 cur cross with 1/4 husky and 1/4 golden retriever....He is one heck of a good 'mouser'(catches lots in the snow) but not much for retrieving anything and loves treeing squirrels. He is very social around people(loves everybody) and other dogs and very(completely) tolerant of little kids pulling/pushing on him. He is strong and the dominant dog(he does not push his way around though or act bossy with the other dogs...but they mess with him at their own peril)here and at 55-60lbs woops the crap out of the 95lb black lab or my parents 80lb lab/drahthaar crosses when it has to be done. Great guard dog to and and has saved my chickens from yote/fox a couple times. Pretty fearless, and he does like to roam if given the chance though. btw - I did get to meet his mother(full blooded mountain cur) and she was a sweet dog.

I'd love to get a mountain cur for my next dog but right now 3 is more than enough

I have one I rescued. My vet, also a good friend of mine, calls her a Kentucky Coon Shepherd"! My son actually drew up fake AKC papers and gave them to him. He framed it and has it hanging in his office!

Trust me, I would LOVE it! However, my husband was very happy when it was discovered that this bear dog had owners...lol. We both want a dog, but at the same time, we don't live the lifestyle for one. We are always on the go and it just wouldn't be fair. We did agree that once we retire to the cabin...I get my dog :) Until then, I have to love everyone else's!

I'm sitting here in camp. It's just myself and the dog tonight. She's laying by the fire and she's sound asleep. It seems like this is the first good sleep she's had in a while.

I'm not surprised considering the coyotes I've heard all evening. I am delaying hitting the sack because she's sleeping so soundly.

I could be wrong, of course, but I have to assume she was dumped here and I'm sitting here wishing I could meet the person who dumped such a great, friendly little dog off in the middle of nowhere.

She was definitely flea infested. The poor girl was being bitten on her hind quarters and she was doing circles trying to get at whatever was biting her.

I was going to wait until tomorrow, but I went ahead and dosed her a little while ago with the K9 Advantix I brought.

I'm looking forward to getting her out of here Sunday. If I can't find someone to take her in I guess I'll end up with another dog.

    Yeah, she's that cute. :D

I am a member of American Brittany Rescue and like my dog more than some people.

The breed you are referring to is a good one. I think the book "Old Yeller" was based off of one.

If you have trouble locating a home. PM me & I will make a couple phone calls & see if I could help.
