I have killed lots of deer with both a .308 and 30.06 and I have also tracked lots of deer others have shot with a rifle. They can run just as far as a bow shot deer. Don't expect a 10 yard tracking job with a bow. It happens every once in a while but is very rare. Follow the 2 hour rule and you'll eventually be glad you did. Yes, you may realize it was unnecessary and hopefully that is the case. Sooner or later though, your going to get a bad angle or hit the off shoulder bone... or worse. Most often, what happens is a quartering shot is taken that hits the off shoulder... with no exit wound, no blood comes out that side. From a tree stand hit, the cavity has to fill with blood before a good trail appears somewhere around the spot where the deer lays down. Sometimes, the entry angle hits stomach as well as a lung or liver and the hole stops up with stomach debris. The deer will die... but if it gets jumped after the hole is plugged and the buck finds a nice hidey hole in which to die, the hunter as often as not probably walks within 5 yards of him and never sees him. It is really easy to miss seeing one laying there when you are intently looking for blood.
Pertersen bowhunting had either this one or something very similar in their magazine I think last fall. That'd be a good place to start.
