Killing a buck just to get him out of the herd is overrated, you really cant have any impact on free range deer genetics. If he makes you happy take him, but don't shoot him just because you read some crap about cull bucks.
Yeah I agree good lord willing I'll have an opportunity to deflate him Monday! There is really no way to 'manage' these deer in my situation, I was just curious what yall might think.....is this the best he could be?
Its hard to tell how old he is body wise because I know southern deer are a bit smaller body wise. I doubt hes over 4-1/2 which means he still should grow some, how much more is a big guess. I, bet its more a nutritional problem than a genetic problem. I believe all deer have the genetics to hit 120" mark, the question is will he find the nutrition to get there.
I don't think this is the best he can be. He looks young. If it was me I like that rack it won't score a lot but it is still cool.
If he will make you happy, shoot him. Otherwise, another year might grow him a bit too, if he survives.
I just read something not to long ago about how rare mature 6 pointers are. If you were able to let me grow in a couple of years you should have a decent chance at harvesting a mature 6 pointer. I think there are special records for 6 pointer. Ha HA, I said special....
Do you remember where you read that? I killed a 4 1/2 year old 6 point, about 4 years ago. He had a 15 inch spread, and his g2s were 9 and 10 inches.
