Hey guys I'm in need of some help on staying warm on stand, primarily base layers. My typical season starts about Oct 25 and I usually hunt until the January 1st. So what clothing systems are you guys running? How do you layer that system, and what temperature range are you hunting in. I will note, I am a tree stand hunter in central IL, so it can dip into the negatives. Thanks for any and all help. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
Under armor has a pretty good layering system but of course you pay for the name....hunting in tree stands myself in central WI i use under armor 3.0 base layers and have been know to stick disposable toe warmer to the clothing on the muscle group on my strong side. Other than that i have one of those heater bags for any January hunting...it is AMAZINGLY warm! Sent from my SM-G935R4 using Tapatalk
I wear a Military 3.0 Fleece Base layer. Then what is on top varies, but for the real cold days I'll buy warmers that stick to my lower back. Cheaper than another wardrobe.
Merino wool base layers and primaloft. Brands are irrelevant but if you get a good quality Merino wool layers and then top it off with primaloft outer layers you will be good. Another thing you can do is drop some hand warmers in internal pockets and outer pockets. Also be sure to cover you neck and head. You loose a lot of heat from the back of your neck and covering that will make a huge difference if you don't already. Under Armour is synthetic and will eventually start to smell. Merino wool naturally resists bacteria so less of a chance it will stink. I use Nomad stuff at the moment but lots of good stuff out there.
Wool base layers, wool or fleece mid layer, wind/water resistant outer layer. DO NOT OVERDRESS WALKING IN. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Under Armour Infrared for next to skin then fleece then camoflauge. It works great. Toasty warm. I use the Under Armor Infrared gloves under regular gloves and stay super warm. Its def worth the money. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Heater Body Suit fan here.....but in my neck of the woods, it doesn't usually get that cold. Since purchasing Cabelas Wooltimate Whitetail System with Wind Shear, I haven't needed my body suit.
Don't get that cold Here either but it's nice just carrying in 1 piece and being done no extra pairs pants no extra tops and jackets just a iwom and that's it don't even gotta wear camo under The iwom either. But I hunt a lot different than many so doesn't mean work for everyone
Heater body suit.... you're welcome! But seriously I have hunted in -30 degree wind chill comfortably with it. I only had base layers, sweat pants, sweat shirt light pants and a light jacket. I wear my mucks and will pull my feet out of them and drop a hand warmer down each leg. Works awesome. Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk
My struggle is usually with my hands and feet. Once they get cold I'm pretty much done. I think one of the best ways to stay warm is to not get hot and sweaty on your way to the stand. You can do that by not wearing your outer layers until you get to the stand. Also I feel like restrictive layers do more harm than good. I wear multiple layers and have found some success with that method, just need to figure out a better way to keep my feet warm.
When you mean restrictive, are you talking about form fitting layers? My outter is an Under Armour scent suit and I feel UA runs smaller to have more of an athletic feel? Maybe that's why I'm getting too cold, not enough room to keep the warm air in. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
^^^^ sky walker hit it. Sweat is enemy #1, and so hard to avoid. It really is a mental game to bring yourself to severely underdress for the hike to the stand. I have found myself sitting at my hunting spot not wanting to get out of my truck. Lol. Like others have already stated, I underdress as much as possible for the walk in. No rubber boots if it's below 40 deg. Once in my stand and settled I secure hand warmers on my wrists and back of my neck. I can feel my whole body warming up about 10 min after that. Yeah I questioned my sanity a few mornings last year, when It was 20° out, and I get out of my car in a T-shirt and shorts for my mile and a half walk in. But staying sweat free is definitely the key! I have my base layers and my outer Layers bungee corded to my summit Viper on my back. Once I'm at the base of the tree I layer up and take my sweet time climbing the tree. By the time I'm settled in I'm nice and toasty. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Last season I was hunting into the late season with cold weather. Buy some of the adhesive carbon activated hand warmers and place one in the middle of your chest, have the feet ones for each boot and then one in a muff for your hands. One thing I DID NOT know... they last 12 hours and if you put them into a zip-lock bag after each use, you can get all 12 hours of use! With the proper base layers, etc. I hunted through many snow storms and was very comfortable. Probably the best thing I got out of last season was how to hunt through the cold!
