Anybody have a problem with static in their house? I have no idea what is going on lately. The only thing I can come up with is my house is possessed. I am getting ZAPPED when I touch stuff in my house. Not just a little minor tingle either. It is a loud hard zap that actually hurts. Never noticed having a problem before. I am petrified to touch anything electrical. What is the deal?

It happens when the humidity gets really low, add a humidifier and try not to rub or scuff as you walk or get out of chairs.
It's harmless to the human body, really hard on electronic stuff.

But before you get a humidifier, have fun with it. Build up some static electricity, say "I am Electroman, obey me or I shall use my powers to smite thee" and then zap the wife and kids. It'll irk the wife, but what the heck, it's fun.

Seriously though, a humidifier will do just fine to get rid of it. If you have hardwood floors in your house, during the winter months you want to maintain between 40 and 50%.

Bring the hose inside and wet your carpeting down. That will stop it. Cheaper than a humidifier.

This year seems to be worse than normal. Thinking all the extra cold dry air the last month or so is the cause.

common all winter here. Has to do with the low humidity in the house.

Walk across the carpet dragging your feet. Then give your wife a kiss. After she gets done smacking you and hollering from getting zapped... just tell her you were checking to see if the old spark is still there. Then give her the thumbs up !!!!! Then RUN !!!!!!!!!!!!!

the lack of humidity can damage your house. We bought this place 2 years ago and it did not have a built in humidifier. Past winter was mild, but this one was so long and bad it cracked the seam of every piece of crown molding we have, not to mention the free electro shock therapy. About a month ago we had a system installed and it nearly eliminated the shocks. Now all I have to do is fix all my crown molding seams. Awesome!

I just pulled up all the carpet downstairs and installed engineered wood flooring (concrete slab) and no more static here. It was really bad when I was rolling up the carpet padding.

The poor dog hated this time of year. :)

oh, yeah. My dog likes to belly crawl across the floor chasing his ball. With the lights out there were so many sparks it looked like Independence Day fireworks.
