Well, I got out for the first time yesterday. I'm usually very selective early and it has cost me in the past, it's been 2 years since I put one down. I was determined to get some freezer meat yesterday if the opportunity came up. I had a small buck go by and then a young 8 pointer checking out 2 does in the field, he is going to be a nice deer, just too young to shoot. I finally had a good doe come in behind me, perfect freezer meat. It is still very grown up in the woods, a lot of weeds and leaves, but she gave me a 12" window at 15 yards. I took the shot, heard the "smack" and watched the other deer run off.... she just stood there looking around. I was a little shocked, thinking I had missed by hitting a limb or something. She stood about 20 yards from me in some pretty thick stuff so I could not see if and where she was hit. I was in disbelief knowing I could not miss at 15 yards, leaves or no leaves, I had a clear shot. After about 3 minutes she literally just fell over. First time I've ever had one do a delayed drop like that, acting as if she was not even hit until she fell over. I'm sure this has happened to others on here, but it was the first time for me. Anyway, I have some good meat, now I can wait for the big boy to walk by me.
I have had it happen to me a couple times. Thought the same things you were thinking. Great feeling when they take the fall though.
Happened to me opening day this year. Shot a doe and she took a few leaps and stopped like nothing happened. She stood still for a bit then her backside wobbled once or twice and she fell over dead. That was the first time I'd seen it happen in person, like you I had just enough time to wonder if I hit her at all.
With a good sharp broadhead they will occasionally do that. Had it happen with a button buck once. He just stood their until he fell over.
Thanks for the replies everyone. I knew I wasn't alone, but it sure made for a great start to the season
Congrats on the doe and awesome story , that would of had me wondering also . Nothing better than getting to watch them go down ..... no tracking involved.
I actually knocked another arrow and was at full draw on a 150 class buck once when he fell over. He never even flinched when I shot the first time, I thought I missed him clean.
I can understand that. I would have done the same thing if she would have given me another clear shot. I was just stunned wondering what I had done wrong. Its amazing how many thoughts can go through your head when something like that happens.
