the engineer part of my brain says they are a great idea. However, I bought a set and my son was shooting them with his new Hoyt Vector Turbo and at 267 FPS we can hear them flying from 20 yards. I am now questioning whether to use them or not.

I shoot them and like them. They do make noise in flight but to me it didn't seem louder than a normal fletched arrow. They are extremely durable, about the only thing that will break one is hitting it with another arrow. It also is extremely easy to re-Fletch an arrow. Go to YouTube and search fobs. You'll see the fob mythbusters video.

Would they pop off on a pass through shot, or prevent the arrow from passing through entirely?

They are designed to pop off on a pass-through. I have also heard of them popping off in flight and it seems pretty common for them to pop off if your carrying your bow to the stand if you rub against any bushes. I have not heard nearly enough good about it to ever make me consider them.

I've been using them for a year after having fits trying to get blazers to tune properly.
    They've been great thus far.
check out archerytalk.com for a lot more opinions on them.
