This is going to be my third year hunting this ground. It is small but I holds a lot of deer. I was wondering where you guys place your stands on the property. I wind comes for the north and west.
Where do the deer come from the wooded area into the opening at? If its a north Wind then on the south of that trail if its a West wind then on the east of where they enter.
most of the times they come from the woods but also they follow the strip of woods on the west side. It s tough hunting small woods. In the morning I hunt the small strip of woods and sometimes in the evening I hunt the woods. I shot a 130 class deer in the woods last here in the afternoon.
looks like a natural trail or drainage about half way on the west end. Set a few stands to compensate for wind on each end I'm guessing they are using that route but looks like the path of least resistance from any pressure
For me a North wind would be tough to hunt. I would probably hunt closer to the road on those days. A west wind however would be good cause you could jump down in that ditch or creek and head due west until you found a nice trail crossing and set a stand close to that. Your not going to leave much scent cause it will be in the bottom of the ditch and the wind would be carrying your scent down there too.
At the end of this season get in there and walk it all out. Get to know it like the back of your hand. Find places for your stands or make some natural ground blinds and clear some lanes. Make note of what wind direction will be best for each spot. You'll probably be better off staying on the edges of the big woods even after you get to know it. Like only go into that woods 20 yards or so. You don't want to push them out of there. Only time I'd might go deeper in the woods would be during the rut maybe. Have a good escape route planned so they don't know your in there as well. Once you get your stand/blind spots figured out clear you a trail to get to them easy and quietly. This will also help with keeping your scent down in the area. Good luck this year!
