Ok so I have this spot on public state land that I need help getting into. The deer are moving from their beds through the woods in the morning hours, however, the only access I have to my stands is to cut almost directly through them. I need some help as to how, if at all, I should go about getting into my stand for morning hunts. The deer move from these beds in the morning around 6-7 am and follow the creek bed onto private land that I could not get permission to hunt. They return in the evening but it is less predictable which way they come back. I have attached a picture and will give you the color code for the diagram. Black: Where I park/enter the woods Maroon: Logging trail into the woods (quickest and quietest way in) Yellow: A few of my stands Blue Weird Shapes: Powerlines that are now WAY overgrown where the deer are able to move and bed Solid Blue Line: Shallow brook with a VERY high ridge on the left bank where my stands are The fields to the bottom and the field in the middle are not cultivated at all. Basically just free-growing weeds and grass. I have seen several hunters in this immediate area before so I'm trying to get deep into the woods away from them.
Could you come across the south part of the one field and slip into the brook and use it as your over up to your stands
No because the powerlines are so overgrown that they are impenetrable and it runs like that for a long ways.
I tried this today. I couldn't make it to the powerlines it was so thick. I think I found some beds though. I didn't spook any deer that I know of which is good and it is raining today so hopefully knocking the scent down some. With the exception of the fields (which are full of weeds up to 5' tall) a majority of the woods in this spot are extremely thick briars and very dense overgrown forest. I did find a good amount of clover and acorns in the smaller two fields in the lower portion of the picture, as well as heavily used trails in the hedgerow between them and the road. It is good to have options. I guess I will just have to take chances, play the wind, and see what happens this season.
If it's too thick to go outside of the logging road, I wouldn't risk it. Get in there before they bed.
I cant provide any help here.....I've never seen deer come off the beds in the morning and go back to the beds in the evening. Good luck with that.
Its hard for me to say also , i play the wind big time , i'm never sure what stand i'm gonna hunt till i actually wake up in the morning and check the wind direction , and sometimes i have to take my alternate routes to get into a certain stand i want to hunt due to the wind .
