Most (80%) dont, at least that much. And alot of times that IS justified.

Not all school districts. My wife is a counselor with her masters. She started at 33k which is one step higher than the teachers in her district start at.

With her great education I would suggest she get a better job.
I fail so understand why so many people complain about their teaching jobs when the private sector is out there. And please don't tell me she loves children, I love bird dogs, but training dogs doesn't pay the bills so I have a job that does.
In America any one is free to start their own company and then you are free to pay yourself as much are you are really worth. But don't be shocked when you find out what your earning potential is, in the real world.

I never complained about the pay, I just stated that because you were incorrect. She's a School counselor not a teacher. She does the job because she loves children and helping them. She might go to another district with higher pay but she has zero plans of switching careers. When you have your dream job, money's not everything.

Money might not be every thing, but it makes every thing accessible to you. :)

And I was not wrong, teachers are payed very well in PA especially for part time employment.

    Exactly.

Far from part time, but hey, I suppose you could take that teaching gig you were being offered and test out the grass on the other side.

Guy I taught with my first year (5 years ago) left teaching to work for Anadarko, and he's easily making 4 times what he made as a teacher. It's not part time, though so maybe that's why?

I can tell you this much, if you do start your own company, you will quickly discover just how part time a teaching job really is.
You won't have summers and holidays to relax and do house hold chores. Its a different world out there trying to make payroll and paying taxes all the while growing a company.

Yep, grew up with my dad doing both. Teaching and owning a small business. Wake up at 1:30AM, drive truck until 5:30, go to school, drive truck from 3:30-6:30. Rinse, wash, repeat. 6 days a week.

Put us through college that way.

Believe me, I know what the "real" world is like.

Then you should go for it, its a great life and a great way to provide for a family. You always have teaching to fall back on if your plans change.

And the only reason I'm contemplating that teaching job is I want to semi retire and slow down a bit, being college level, I will only have class times in the afternoon.
