I've never used a stabilizer before but it seems like everyone has one. Are they really necessary and what are the pros and cons? How do you determine the length and weight you need?

It's kind of trial and error for me...lol. I now shoot the 6" Bee Stinger sport hunter extreme and love it.

Is it necessary? No. Does it help? In most cases as long as you get one that does actually help stabilize. Otherwise it's just another dampener. I've had several on my bow now and so far anything under 8" didn't seem to do anything. For hunting I use a 10" Stokerized Hunter. Target shooting is a little different.

Do you have problems with that long of one getting in the way during hunting? I mean having that extra 12 inches on there

Killed 2 deer with it in the end this year and had no problems at all. Friend of mine hunts with a 12"+ quick disconnect. Comes out right at 13". He doesn't have any issues either. Think about it this way. Your arrow sticks out somewhere in the neighborhood of 20". Is that an issue? Even at full draw its more likely still shorter than a rifle.
