My meat head days weren't that distant in the past. I still enjoy lifting now that I'm getting back into it. But, it's for different reasons than before. Then, it was all about getting bigger and stronger for competitions. Now, it's for LBM and to compliment my cardio for the best health and racing weight I can be in. In fact, it's been a good change of pace the past week while I was training a good friend of mine and a couple of his lifting partners on proper squat and deadlift form for their upcoming PL meets. Not entirely true. A friend of mine is in his late 50's and holds many PL records. He was selected to go the the Worlds meet a few years ago but had to opt out due to bad shoulders. Post surgery, and he's lifting even more than before. Another friend of mine is in his mid 40's and in better health now than he was in 20 years ago when I first met him. Agreed. While it's proportional to some degree, it's not linear. I have longer arms and torso. But, short legs. I'm excellent at squats and deadlifts. Suck at bench.
He had weak shoulders due to some injury playing football back in college or something. He damaged a shoulder in a meet pressing 355. Within six months post surgery, he was very close to 400 pounds. If one trains right, there's not a whole lot to cause slowdown as they get older in life. If one stops being active when they're older, that's the real issue of what will cause problems.
