BTW, for some reason Rhabdomyolysis is more common now than it used to be. I used to hardly ever see it in patients unless there was serious trauma involved. Now there are bad cases just from people out running in the park. The drugs people take to control cholesterol really increased the number of rhabdomyolysis cases coming into the emergency dept.... but are these kids taking statins?? Prolly not. But I suspect something is going on. People have been over-exerting themselves for a long time so it's weird that so many are being hospitalized for it nowadays. IMHO.
I haven't touched a weight since the end of track season my senior year of high school... 1998. Ouch getting old. I weigh about 20 pounds less now than I did in high school. I used to have a real nice build from football and track, now I am just a skinny 30 year old guy Maybe when the boy gets a little older I will join a gym again. I have thought about it many times over the past few years but haven't made the commitment. BTW I am sure I wouldn't be able to come even close to touching those reps.
OH- "He was a 5-7 guy about 170, straight thru, and has to be done in two minutes no rest or touching knees or chest got to stay in the leaning rest!! And good ones." these SEALs have no quit! christine - i have heard that it is more common now, out trainers here said they maybe had one case in the past.
I used to have the same from football and roofing. Now I'm just a 30 year old fat guy. LOL. I've lifted sparingly since HS. I enjoy biking 6 or 7 months a year, that's about the extent of my exercise. Even at my best I couldn't have touched either squats or benches. I have horrible knees and never got real serious with the benching.
LOL! I managed to make my way to the top level of Wii boxing without a defeat. Kind of ticked Kendall off because he keeps getting knocked out. I don't have any idea what I'm doing other than being a complete spaz with the occasional upper cut. It's a good work out tho'! :D
I used to work out with a guy in Charleston that would, once a week, do a bench workout of 315#'s (3 plates, each side) 10X....10 sets. Beast. I wouldn't sniff the test, today. I "might" have been able to when I was 20.....and I was 30#'s heavier, then. p.s. I am now officially "old".
I am glad I am too old to even care about squats or bench pressing. I do know that I can take out and put in 2 complete sets of concaves in our 2588 combines in an hour. When you tough guys can do that and not get bloody... get back to me. :D Tim
I could have done it when I was in college, forsure on the squat. Now at age 41 with a titanium plate in my back, not even close. Bench .. at my peak in my mid 20's, I competed in powerlifting contests I benched 365 and squated 550 .. both competition judged lifts. I weighed 190 at the time. The squat test in 1 hour back then would have been a definately doable. I used to warm up with 185 for 20 reps, I am sure I could have put 190 on and done it 100 times in 1hour. 20 reps every 10 min or 10x10 with 5 minute breaks.. no prob.. The Bench at 190 in 1 hour.. Not so sure. I used to rep 190lbs.. 15 times which I could do pretty easily fresh.. but in 1 hour and a100 reps total.. I doubt it.. my best bet at this bench would be to do the 10x10 .. with 6 min rests in between. I still think I may have gassed on that one.. wish I was young again and could try it though!
Not sure I could do it (like Josh realized, it's a lot harder than most think it is). Right now, since I never one rep max anything, I have no idea what I can do on the bench, and since I have a slight herniated disc in my lower lumbar region, squats are done for me. I know I can end my 5x5 bench set at 215-225 depending on my day, so I would imagine I can max around 250 or 260. I weight 163, and I do a quick warm up set at 135 when benching, and that's EASY. Add 30lbs, and then do 100 reps in an hour, I still think it would be hard. For me, it's about leanness now. Low BF %, and could cardiovascular. I'm still young, and want to be as mobile and active as I can throughout my life. Power lifting only results in long term slow downs later in life.
Creatine has been linked to it Christine. That and especially some of these knuckleheads who'll dehydrate themselves to lose weight. I saw it at least once a every month or two in the Army. One knucklehead getting ready for Ranger School, strapped on an 80# pack, got dressed in full combat gear, including rubber dumby M16 and went on a 26 mile "march" in 105* Georgia heat. He only took 2 canteens (about 2 quarts) of water with him. He was found by Range Control wandering around, not knowing anything, and brought to the hospital, temp 107*, I still don't know how he hadn't started seizing yet!!!! Ck's were >500,000!!!!!
Nope no way I could accomplish that especiaaly at my age. I enjoy lifting and do it more than ever now. I have a Buddy that I think could accomplish it. He holds several powerlifting records in a near by large city. He's and animal!
Not a chance for me. I never really got into the whole powerlifting thing. In high school, the most I ever benched was 240, and the most I ever squatted was 320. My best lift was the hang clean, which I did 275 I think. A lot of you guys would have kicked my ass in a fight lol
Just curious. I know that it is based on your body weight. But, dont you think it would be a tougher challenge for a 300# lineman than it is for a 150# weightlifter???
Yes, much harder. The weight plus the fact that most "bigger" people have longer limbs makes that type of training harder for them as compared to smaller people.
