Just got my spring permit for Wisconsin Zone 2. My week isn't until May, but I also got a permit for Zone 1 in the drawing which is in April. I have no where to hunt for zone 1, but I may have a few spots for zone 2! I am pumped, time to get new broadheads for turkey and start practicing!!!
On a separate concern, I don't know what kind of call to get. In the past when I have hunted turkey I went with a family member who did the calling for me. This year I will be doing my own calls. Anyone have any recommendations on some easy to learn calls? Push button, slate?
Def use a push button or a box call, IMO they are the easiest to be effective with. Then if you want to get better after the season and have more versatility pick up a slate and a mouth call and practice a lot with them. I just wouldn't recommend trying something completely new and difficult right before the season. Good luck!!!
Thanks a lot for the info guys. I've been watching videos and reading about broadheads and I'm thinking of a Magnus Bullhead but I'm curious if I can go for a body shot with them as well. If I get a great looking tom I'm thinking of having it mounted.
I would say learn with a pot call, slate, aluminum or glass or crystal all work great and just take a little time practicing on. Scoot
I can show you a few pretty good public land spots around Iowa county and up by the Wisconsin river if you want. There is a lot of good public land around that holds pretty good populations. I started on a slate call and a box call, either will work great and is pretty easy to learn. If you have never used a call before I would say get a quality box call and start with that. I like Woodhaven calls and have always had great success with them. You will be able to get a lot of sounds out of one of those with just a little practice. Eventually if you are going to focus on bowhunting gobblers I would say to start using mouth calls. They help keep your hands free but I wouldn't start with one right off the bat because they can be a little tricky. Let me know if you want a few spots, I would be more than happy to help. If you get a later season I may have small piece of private I could take you on. I just have to see how the turkeys faired over the winter at that spot.
Thanks for a lot of the help and offers. #WiRutJunky I am not going to be hunting the Zone 1. I live in Zone 2 and I just don't have the time to drive there and spend time scouting etc before I hunt. Thank you very much for the offer though. I live on the East side of the state near Kenosha. #Wiscohunter I have April 20th I think is what it is. I told the DNR people I didn't want the tag because I would not be able to use it. I'm still not sure how I got the Zone 1 since I asked for a zone 2 originally. So far I have ordered a push type call and a double reed mouth. I've got a little time between now and May to get ready for zone 2. I am going to just listen to some stuff on the internet and do my best. Worse case scenario I'll do my scouting and hope for the best with just the push type call. Either way I am ecstatic to get out there and try this with a bow. I've shot turkeys with a shotgun but never with a bow. I came very close to shooting a goose with my bow last year but I wouldn't take the shot at 38 yards since I'm new to bowhunting and the size of the goose.
