Hello all. Over the past winter I lost the private land that I had been hunting, and along with moving to a new town, I am hunting some public land that I found. When I went out to scout/look around I was surprised at the how the land laid out. From the entry point/parking area there is about a 150 acre CRP field with some pines and scattered oaks. As I got further back to where the majority of the trees are, I found mostly mature oaks and some popular mixed in, good white oaks. The width of the trees is probably 50 yards wide and a few hundred yards long and then it drops off down a hill about 30 feet down where it is all river bottom swamp. I found a few trails, two that looked to be the main trails that parallel the woods along the swamp. With this being pretty tight quarters and the drop from where I would have a stand, would anyone hunt a spot like this? Thanks for any advice tips!
Absolutely. Most likely your mature bucks will be in the swamp/river bottoms. Unless its completely un pressured, then you may get a buck bedding up in the oaks. But since you just scouted it, most likely thats all it takes to send the bucks into the thick of the river bottom. If it was me, on the first hunt of season, i would hunt the trails parallel to the river bottom, with the ability to see as much as i can into the river bottom. That way hoping to get eyes on a big buck. Then next hunt i would move in on the exact spot i saw said buck. Also go extremely slow on your walk in, like painfully slow. Exactly what I would do also. You definitely would need to be mobile with hunting something tight like that. Sent from my SM-A037U using Tapatalk
