Guys - Where do you go to shoot your bows and guns? In NY, there are tons of Sportsmans Clubs with pistol, rifle, shotgun, and archery ranges to go shoot at. Most clubs are $200ish the first year and then $75-$125 per year after to be a member and have some pretty nice facilities. They regularly host competitive events in all different shooting sports, like 3D shoots, pistol events, trap events, etc. I've tried to look online, and it appears there are only trap shooting facilities out there. Am I missing something? Where would one go if I wanted to shoot my bow and can't do it at home? Where would I go to shoot some guns or my pistols? For reference the new place we are moving into is in Cary - I'm hoping there is something reasonably close.
I am hearing that most of the shooting goes on down the side streets. Some of it spills onto Michigan Avenue every now and then. I could not resist. Good luck on your search sir.
Dang FB beat me to it. I was going to say check with your local law enforcement and they'll guide you to the BGD's, Crips, Bloods, etc.
Uhhh....CoonCreekHuntClub.com We have archery and trap/sporting clays. No pistol range yet but we're working on it. Shooting memberships next year get you key card access to the clubhouse whenever you want along with access to automated trap machines and the archery range. $250 intro fee, $100/year after that. If you want to shoot pistols there's a few indoors places nearby - On Target in Crystal Lake or GAT Guns in Dundee are the two most prominent. Both are pay-as-you-go type places with nice indoor ranges.
I thought about the club Justin but wasn't sure about gun stuff. If/when that opens I'll join for sure.....the archery range was nice last time I was there.
If you're looking for a rifle range close by..... hahahahahha... good luck. There's the Aurora Sportsman's Club which is not in Aurora and I think it's like $500.00+ a year. It's a good distance range tho'. Up to 600 yards. Coon Creek has some good shoots, or so I hear. I could tell you stories about the yahoos that run the place tho'. heh heh heh Blackhawk Archers has some nice archery 3d events. They're way out to the west of you as well. There used to be a 3d course in Cary but I'm pretty sure they got zoned out of existence. If you want to get in on pistol stuff, check the United States Rifleman's Association. Website here ---> United States Rifleman's Association Most of the guys there are based in Chicagoland. They have fun and fairly cheap defensive pistol classes in various areas. They have a FB site too. Good guys to get on board with. Tell 'em I sent you. If you want to do any IDPA or 3 gun, you'll have to be prepared to drive.
I don't have any desire to shoot anything competitive with guns. I just like to shoot once a month or so with my pistols as I carry daily. I also reload a lot of stuff and like to shoot some to experiment with loads. I'll be starting the process of getting my CCW as soon as I get out there and the process is defined and avaialable and once I have that I'll will want access to a place I can shoot a couple times a month to stay sharp. For archery, I'll likely join Coon Creek. I was just hoping maybe there was a place to shoot rifles, pistols, and archery all at the same place for a reasonable fee.
There are places like that.... just not in Northeastern IL. Really, you should go to some of the defensive pistol classes given by the USRA. They'll be setting up new events for 2014 in next couple of months. It's a lot of fun.
I think the best all around club with everything is Kenosha Conservation Club but that will be a bit of a haul from Cary. They have rifle, pistol, archery, clays ranges all in one location. Sent from my BNTV600 using Tapatalk 4
I'm sure it's fun, but according to my wife I have enough time consuming expensive hobbies. When I did the shooting test portion for my NY CCW permit I apparently scored in the top 3% of where the local Sheriff's department averages. They make civilians do the same shooting test as the cops to get a permit. The instructor is still trying to recruit me to attend some IDPA events or go to the Sig Academy courses with him after he learned about my competitive archery background. I just don't have the interest.........when I get spare time now I spend it on the boat or on my hunting grounds. I just need a spot to plink a couple times a month to stay sharp.
Shooting's not a hobby! It's an important life skill!!! :p I don't have much interest in the IDPA (speed and weird gun rules part) but I like the moving and shooting around barricades of those type of courses. You shoot around barricades at the defensive pistol course. Change hands, mag changes on the fly... the kind of stuff that you can't get from just shooting at an indoor type range. Yesterday, while I was trying to get within rifle range of any elk that wasn't 3 billion vertical miles from my truck I noticed a mountain lion was hunting in the same area. I just could see his fresh tracks sneaking around in the pines. As much practice as I've had drawing from holster and shooting... I still wouldn't stand a chance against a lion. Oh well, I open carry my 92f anyhow. Maybe he'll choke on it. LOL
