Sorry BigJ, maybe you never played in Arrowhead Stadium but if you could honestly tell me the fan noise had zero effect on the outcome of Chargers/Chiefs game tonight you obviously didn't watch the game. That stadium was loud and the Chargers were having miscues all night with false starts, timeouts, illegal shifts. Even the ESPN crew was talking about how loud it was. Elements played into the game in the 2nd and 3rd quarter but even during the storm Arrowhead was bumpin'. GO CHIEFS!
I know a guy that was really obsessed with sports. Look how he is overcoming the crowd noise to achieve such balance between body and mind.
The ESPN crew??? That settles it. BigJ.....I tried to tell you. Your NFL resume' means nothing in these circles. Wasn't it "sprinkling a little" in KC?
From what I remember BigJ played in Denver therefore Mile High Stadium. Mile High Stadium is LOUD. So if he says crowd noise did not effect him and his performance then I would say that he was not effected anywhere in the NFL.
Err maybe it was the KC Star, 810 sports radio and I guess me...who was there and witnessed at least 3 plays the crowd affected Rivers. Again, watch the game. Sorry you'll never convince me that crowd noise didn't play into the game. Jeff, come to Arrowhead sometime and witness 80,000 screaming fans , you might change your pompous attitude.
Go to UT and watch a game and 80,000 might not seem like such a distraction. You're telling a seasoned NFL player he doesn't know what he's talking about (on things - NFL).....and you have the audacity to call ME "pompous"? That's rich.
OK, let me be as clear as I possibly can here.... I never said (go back and read all of my posts on this subject!) crowd noise has no effect on play, it can IF the team/players are not prepared and properly coached. What I DID say is that crowd noise is a non-factor in a game where the team is well coached and prepared. Again, I've been there....ON THE FIELD during games where the crowd was so loud it was hard to hear the play call from Elway in the huddle. But we all knew what to do when we got to the line of scrimmage. We had a game plan and an alternate way of relaying our play signals to other players in the event of a loud crowd. It never effected Elway or anyone else. At least I never saw it during my time in Denver, it never bothered me or any of my teammates. In fact we would laugh at how deathly quite the stadiums would get when we busted off a 40 yard completion on a 3rd and long. In fact Elway would say "it's time to hear the crickets" in those situations...he loved shutting up loud crowds. Sorry to burst some of your bubbles guys. Oh but it's ok, you can still go to the games, paint your faces with your teams colors, go shirtless in 30 degree weather and scream at the top of your lungs. If it helps, you can tell yourself that you were a part of helping your home team win...maybe even take some of the credit and tell your friends that without you all would have been lost. Just keep buying tickets....
Jeff, you know as well as I that some folks are so "fanatic" about their particular sport/team they are willing to believe anything. It reminds me of an old "Coach" episode where one of the students at Minnesota State University Screaming Eagles walks up to Hayden Fox (Craig T Nelson) and asks..."we gonna win Saturday coach?" and Hayden replies "Are you on the team" (can't remember the exact words but I think that's how it went.) Sorry to break the bad news to some of you but the only folks effecting the outcome of the game are the ones with the pads and helmets on.....on the field!
Dude.... hate to burst your bubble. Arrowhead isn't the only stadium that has a lot of thousands of screaming fans. You think the players on the field actually took notice that they were in a "especially loud place to play"? They've heard it for a very long time EVERY SINGLE WEEK!!! I've been to a LOT of sporting events and heard a LOT of loud stadiums. It all sounds the same to the athletes on the field that live it everyday of their lives. And FYI there are false starts and blah blah blah on both sides of the ball in every game. The only ones that are emphasized are the ones against the visiting team (because of crowd noise)
Dude.....you're not big enough to burst my bubble. I'll promise you Arrowhead didn't "sound the same" to the athletes last night. SD had an illegal formation, 4 delay of game penalties and 1 false start with 2 lost time outs. Maybe they were just "off". Again, I don't believe that crowd noise isn't a problem for opposing teams and maybe during BigJ's playing days it wasn't a problem. I'm not sure. I guess all these writers don't know what they are talking about but YOU do. I'll just take your opinion because you're the expert and end this discussion with a few articles that suggest crowd noise MIGHT have played a part in the game last night. http://kansascity.sbnation.com/2010/9/14/1687863/video-philip-rivers-angry-chargers-chiefs http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2010/9/14/1687912/dexter-mccluster-hands-down http://kansascity.sbnation.com/2010/9/13/1687271/chiefs-vs-chargers-arrowhead-crowd http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/multimedia/photo_gallery/0604/gallery.toughplaces/content.10.html
Well you keep listening to the "ESPN crews" and writers all you want. And yeah..... a lot of them don't know what they are talking about. A lot of them never played a damn sport in their lives. But they can write about it all they want. So keep posting your articles from the Skip Bayless, Jay Mariotti, and Woody Paiges of the world. I'll get my answers from people that have actually lived it. If it makes you all warm and fuzzy inside that KC and their fans have some type of super hero powers on opposing teams... so be it. Not even sure why it matters to you but..... whatever. If that's what you need to cling to, congrats.
NY.....It's the old "12th man" thing. Either that, or he has the KC crowd in his fantasy league. You're not arguing with us, Redna. You're arguing with a seasoned NFL veteran. Do you ever look to see the source of the things you copy/paste? Think about what sells more print. Hey.....you don't have a chief's head dress - do you? For some reason the Miller Light commercial with the guy dressed up in the cat costume is coming to mind. He understands the importance of the crowd, too.
Redna, You can believe anything you want. If you think the crowd has as big an impact on the game as you think it does because some sports writers say so then so be it. All I can tell you here is I KNOW the truth. Have you ever met a sports writer?? Well I have (of course) and I know how they act, why they do the things they do and where (and why) they get their information. Just as Jeff has eluded to it's all about selling print. They regurgitate the talking points I mentioned in my earlier posts put out there by the players and management. Oh and by the way, Rivers was mad because his center wasn't watching the play clock and they squandered a fourth and short situation when they needed it badly. In a silent count situation, the center needs to keep an eye on the clock just as the QB does from the time he breaks the huddle. The center needs to be aware of the clock and his QB for the snap signal. It's not that hard to do if you keep focused. What happened on that play was so painfully obvious to anyone who knows what they're looking at I'm almost embarrassed to have to explain it. The video doesn't show the entire play just the last seconds before the play clock ran out. But, you can clearly see Hardwick is still making line calls, he is doing this because the Chiefs changed their entire defensive coverage at the last second (look at the linebackers moving and strong safety signaling the new coverage to the corner) this made Hardwick have to call out a different blocking scheme but he ran out of time. You think the crowd did that? Nope, the CHIEFS did!
