do you look down upon them, do you aim for em, r you happy with em? pretty common questions so what do you think? i would never really aim for them unless there is a straight down deer or facing away deer then ill put it right between the shoulder blades, am i happy with that shot? you frickin bet i am! no tracking required, so what you have to make a follow up shot, ill take a spine shot if i can get one.
That is a really poor decision. If I were you I would quit that practice immediately. The first shot I took from my bow on a deer was on a buck straight down. I missed the spine and that deer suffered for nearly 12 hours with its guts hanging out. I felt horrible and vowed never to take that type of shot again. If any newbie is reading this post, please do not follow the above "advice". LongIslandBowhunting, you hunt the way you want man, I am just calling it like I see it.
my first deer i ever shot was a direct facing away spine shot, dont see anything wrong with it, if your a little left or a little right then you blow through the back of the ribcage right into lungs, if u miss alittle up or alittle down then you still hit spin, i think its a great shot:D
The spine is a very small target and I would never take or advise anyone else to ever intentionally attempt a spine shot. What if the deer moves a few inches? If you are aiming at the spine where does your arrow hit? I had an opportunity last weekend to take a spine shot and passed. I was hunting near some houses with people in the backyards and had 6 deer within 20 yards. I was afraid to take numerous double lung shots for fear the deer would run through the yards with the people in them. I never considered taking a spine shot and trying to drop the deer in their tracks and neither should anyone else. If this offends someone, so be it. It is not a high percentage shot.
The spinal cord is about the diameter of a pencil and it's surrounded by bone and gristle. On a downward shot the arrow is more likely to deflect than penetrate through spinous processes. If it deflects down through one lung... big deal, you have a one lunged deer which you will mostly likely kill but may never find. It's a poor choice.... bottom line.
In 21 years of hard-core hunting and watching several vids and going to numerous seminars and all that hoopla that goes with it I have never once heard any proponents for a spine shot. I accidentally dropped a doe with a spine shot on a super windy day and immediately had to get out of my stand and cut the jugular so I didn't have to watch this poor deer try to paw itself away in total panic and confusion. Not trying to be anyones conscience but what ever happened to bow hunters taking ethical kill shots (we used to be known for it, which is why it is still highly tolerated and respected sport). Bad shots do happen but it's never intentional. Did the boom of user friendly bows start introducing a new crowd to the sport that will give the old school guys a bad rap?
I would never take one on purpose and I'm disappointed if I do make one because I missed my mark where I was aiming. I try to be a perfectionist an hitting the spine isn't perfection it's getting lucky on a missed shot
Seriously? Is this discussion even occurring? I know some of my topics have been less than popular the past few weeks but this is completely ridiculous and unethical. You really can't be patient or considerate enough to wait for a proper shot? Way too little margin for error.
a dead deer is a dead deer, weather i double lung em or spine shoot em. wasnt really looking for any sort of debate here, just simple opinions about if you would or would not attempt it. also long island is overpopulated with deer, a kill is just helping population buck or doe.
The chances of that deer being "a dead deer" are much more slim by taking a spine shot. It's too hard to hit effectively. Don't take them.
You can't double lung a deer with a spine shot. You either hit one lung or the spine. A deer can survive on one lung.
The death of any animal is not anything to take lightly. Our job as hunters is to make as quick and clean a kill as possible. To say "a dead deer is a dead deer" is the wrong mentality. A spine shot is NOT a quick killing shot, thus the required follow up. In the end it's your choice to do as you like but i would encourage you to rethink this subject.
Ridiculous. Many times, a spine shot deer will be able to kick around and crawl pretty far. You can't guarantee "a quick follow up shot". The only thing you're guaranteeing, is a painful, scary, and awful way to die. Anyone who intentionally takes a spine shot is a selfish moron.
