Just sharing the process for prototyping and designing a target. The process for solving how to do things is enjoyable . We started with the request to come up with a crossbow discharge target by those that enjoyed our broadhead targets so we expanded from there. In order to speed up the process for the bag targets we built a compression box (compactor) making the process faster/easier and to make our targets more uniform and rectangular. We used to stuff the compressive material between the energy dissipation layers by hand but that was slow and not as tightly packed and was a hell of a workout.

As stated, this all started with the requested creation of a crossbow discharge target. Penetration tests due to the multi-layered energy dissipation layers were so promising we expanded to larger bag targets. Here are the early tests on discharge targets that are only 5 and 6 inches deep

There may be questions as to the sources for the materials we are using. Sorry. The energy dissipation layers cannot be purchased by the average Joe. That material is used in a specialized industry and we are able to get the drop but only authorized installers are able to buy the material.

We are planning to only sell locally and at shows we attend since freight/postage would more than double the price but this process my help the enterprising DIY guy that may wish to try their hand at making bag targets.

So do you call your cross bow customers not real customers because of the weapon they choose to use?

LOL. Its just a target. They are target users. A crossbow was used in testing since no real, human powered bow can produce such high KE and MO. If it can stop a crossbow bolt, it will easily stop an arrow.

So you are saying a cross bow has more KE and MO than a compound bow could possibly have? Seems like a more sure fire humane way to dispatch a deer. I know as archers we all have percieved peer groups but I have come to learn that crossbows have their place in the archery world just like the traditional guys can acknowledge the compound bows, we are all hunters.

I would also be willing to buy a target, if my bulldog ever wears out.

Yes, because they are a stored energy , shoulder fired machine with a stock and not a human powered weapon. We sought to really tax the stopping power of the target with a super powerful bolt figuring if it can stop a bolt from a high powered shoulder fired weapon, it would have no problem stopping an arrow.

Firearms are even better but they too would not be a weapon used by a bowhunter using human powered weaponry.

Yes, when we shoot targets, we are all archers. We make targets for archers.

Yes, gun users, muzzleloader users, crossbow users, spear users, atlatl users are all hunters. Guys that hunt with human powered bows are the only ones that are bowhunters.

All of this is way outside the scope of this thread and is far off topic. Its almost as if you hope to change the subject matter of this thread to a crossbow topic. I would invite you to start a thread about that. This one is about targets. I'm not interested in getting caught up in the drama you are hoping to manufacture here.

At this time we are only planning to market them locally as freight/postage would more than double the price. The same is true for our huge broadhead targets.

That is rich considering the history of the business partner you have.

Based on your comments thus far and your signature line, its clear that you are harboring some sort of emotional frustration related to crossbows that you cant wait to tell the world about. I wanted to tell you that I’m not interested in the drama and angst you are trying to create here. Its clear you are not interested in the subject matter and are trying to start an off topic argument based on your emotional frustration related to crossbows. Take your pouting someplace else (perhaps Facebook). Here we talk about bowhunting.

Preach your mission in a thread of your creation. This one is about solving the challenges related to making of a cube shaped bag target that doesn’t look like a bulging ball and what goes into making and testing such a target.
