So what is the real advantage to a speedy bow? Im only shooting around 290fps which is slow compared to alot of bows out there but is very comfortable in all conditions. Id like to hear why speed has all the attention?
It's just like with cars - fast is fun! I like as much speed as I can shoot comfortably b/c it gives me flatter arrow trajectory and better penetration. However with that said I went to a slower bow shooting a heavier arrow at less poundage for this year. Soo.....speed isn't everything!
Deffinatly agree. Is this IBO speed or through a chronograph. My bow IBO's at 331 but my true speed through a chrono is about 285-295.
I shot my PSE Bow Madness, 74#, 28" draw through the chrono 2 nights ago. I was usually between 338 - 336. I was suprised at the speed, but I think it is was the lighter arrows. My Hoyt ProHawk was 306-308, same config. I would much rather gauge my kinetic energy at impact, as I think that would be a better estimate of killing capability.
Gj, you are shooting an entire football field in 1 second. I am pretty sure that bow ain't slow. I am probably shooting around 170-180 fps and that is plenty to kill a deer.
How are you shooting so fast. At 74 pounds you have to shoot at least 370 grain arrows. Im shooting my Bow Madness 73 pounds, 28 inches and im only getting between 285 and 300 on a good chrono. You might want to weigh your arrows im shooting about a 410 grain arrow Easton ST Epic 340 arrows at 28 inches.
My very first bow was a PSE Nova, it had a min grain arrow weight of 420 or you risk damage to the bow. Id be curious to know your total arrow weight. Im betting youre on the light side.
Personally, I like a comfortable shooting bow over anything else. If you can comfortable draw 85lbs in -25 degrees then more power to you. I can't - so I "settle" for 73 lbs at 300ish fps. Plenty fast.
Yes sir. I was shooting 125 grain heads last year as well but with really light arrows (GT Velocity Pro) with a finished weight around 385 grains. That was out of my Elite Judge set at 67-68 lbs. That bow is rated at 343-347 IBO. With my 28" draw I was getting around 315 fps on the chrono. This year I'm shooting GT Kinetics with 125 grain Nitrons with a finished weight around 450 grains out of my z7 Xtreme set at 63 lbs and an IBO speed of 330. Haven't put it through the chrono yet but I'll be happy to touch 300 fps. Speed is cool, but I'm hoping to make up for my lack of speed with a little heavier arrow and better or equal penetration.
When you all get little more mature you'll realize speed isn't everything. comfort in draw becomes #1. Doesn't matter if the arrow's flyin 270 fps, or 350 fps, a well placed shot is what takes down the arrow, otherwise indians would've died from starvation.
I'm shootin 411 gr East ST 340s w/100gr heads @ 277, still kills the deer. But I have to admit, I'd like to drive a porche once in a while.
Since when is 290 fps slow? Especially for a hunting setup. Speed is overrated and completely misunderstood by about 90% of bow hunters.
270... I wish. I'm all about a comfortable bow now. I loved my equalizer but my shoulder doesn't. Even at 40 lbs. Has anyone shot the ez7? Is it as smooth as they say?
Ask your boy Jim Miller. He's got one. Oh, and he wrote a Blog about it too. May want to check those out sometime. http://www.bowhunting.com/blog
The guy can't even pronounce his own last name and I'm supposed to believe what he writes in a blog???
290fps, for most hunting setups is smoking. You have to remember that the IBO my be 330 or whatever, but by the time you decrease draw length, poundage and add weight to a 350 arrow, you'll lost a bunch. My Allegiance is shooting about 285. Thats from the 335 IBO on the bow. Why? 28" draw, -5lbs and 25gr of added arrow weight.
That what i tell everyone. I actually made my local mathews dealer mad because my bow shot faster than his. He said all bows will shoot IBO when setup for hunting. After arguing with him for about 2 hours he finally got it out and was slower, but he was only 2 FPS behind me.
