Which do you think is more important speed or kinetic energy? We cut 1" off of my arrow length which gave my 2 fps more but I lost 1 fp of kinetic energy. I am shooting a Mathews switchback xt @ 28.5" draw and 69lbs. shooting a maxima hunter 350. total weight is about 402 gr. So should I keep the ke up or the speed?
kinetic energy for me, speed is all the bow hipe for bragging rights and accuracy you need for shooting tournaments and so forth. My 04' hoyt viper tech shoots about 270 fps which is about 60+ fps slower than todays models, but it is still deadly. It all comes down to practice and using the right combinations of arrow weight, broadhead weight among other things. speed is the last thing i'm worried about!
You wont notice a 2 fps gain, or a 1lb/ke Lost. don't waste your time. However, when you gain speed you don't lose KE. In fact, you can cut/or add arrow weight for about +/- 50 grains and gain KE both ways, before you see a big loss. KE is two parts speed. The heavier you go the more momemtum, pentration, you gain.
Here is why I am wondering. I really like mathews bows not for the hype or the name just because its the most comfortable for me to shoot. Now I shot the Z7 and set up for me with my arrows its shooting 300fps and getting about 80lbs of ke. my switchback is shooting 268 fps and only getting 65lbs. of ke. So should I buy the Z7 or is there a way for me to gain both with my switchback?
Unless you plan on hunting anything bigger than a Moose you don't need anymore KE. 65ft/lbs is plenty enough.
Ask yourself this.... Was my bow in tune with the longer arrow?.... If it was, it's not anymore. Cutting your arrow shorter only to adjust your speed and KE is probably not the best idea. Get a perfect tune between your arrow and bow and let it be. This may include adjusting your DW, Arrow length, tip weight, arrow spine, etc. If your one of those guys that likes speed then use a light tip weight and lighter arrow and adjust your spine, DW and arrow length to find the perfect tune for that arrow and tip weight. The same way if you like more KE then use more tip weight and a heavier arrow and again find the perfect spine, adjust your DW and arrow length accordingly. Refer to the Easton tuning guide for more details. Good luck.
you thought? I have always wondered what people thought about this same subject......I have a 28.5" draw but I have always shot 31.25" arrows with 125 grain Thunderheads. I like the penetration I get but would like a bit more speed out of my Hoyt Ultrasport. I have never done the math regarding the KE or shot through a chronograph but would guess I have plenty of KE to give up and still be comfortable to get some more speed. Any thoughts?
i shoot a hoyt katara at 70#, 29" draw, my hunting arrows weigh 485gr. and my bow shoots 285fps on a chrono. dose anyone know how to convert it to KE?
Speed X Speed X Weight / 450, 250 285x285x485/450,240= 87.50 ft/lbs. of kinetic energy. Basically, your kicking some serious ass with that setup.
