Starting this year they are allowing hand thrown spears to hunt deer. I need to do some more reading on it but I think its for the season choice antlerless deer only. Ive always wanted to try this, better start making a spear!
Ever since I saw Jared Allen's video spearing an elk I've wanted to try a spear! I even looked into it and Cabela's sells Cold Steel Zamburu spears for $80 or so. I can't find any laws in Minnesota for it so I just let it be. Definite bucket list item though!
not gona knock anyone for doin it but why? I would think a deer would really react to the action of a guy throwing then the speed its traveling at the deer could be in another county by the time it gets to it. To me best case a miss worst case alot of wounding, to each their own. I dont know enough about it.
Just watched the Jared Allen video online, never saw spearing anything but pigs before this video. Must be mainly done with bait? A cant see its effective range being much over maybe ten yards. I'd imagine it would be an incredible rush, if you do it I'd love to see a video. Best of luck!
I am for running them down and biting their neck until they suffocate ... Seriously, whatever floats your boat .... legally of course
I actually have a spear from africa that was used to hunt lions. The KE of these things hitting are ridiculious and you don't even have to throw them very hard. I hope this becomes legal where i am at.
I would think that alot of deer suffer and get wounded by this but don't actually die. Don't think it is something that I could ever do.
there are 2 videos on youtube of a guy hunting whitetails with spears, the first on he waits until she is right under neath him and he just drops it and slices her lung and pretty much the side of her off, the next video, he throws it and gets a clean pass through on one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBV3mRlzJ2M http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjMkgwxObis Gersty
Atlatls are legal in Missouri. No really they had a season last year. http://www.columbiamissourian.com/s...r-atlatl-many-say-it-was-learning-experience/
Neither of those video's did anything to convince me that it's a good idea. First video was way back and high and the second video just grazed her right side but thankfully she went down. Glad that he was able to recover them both though!
Bad idea I feel. I watched Tim Wells spear a buffalo and felt that it was sort of sketchy, and a whitetail would be much harder to get a good throw on (I would think). I mean it was amazing that he was able to get so close and kill one with a spear, but at the same time, it was a horrible throw that got lucky and cut the artery in the buffs back end. They gave it time to lay down and die and by the time they recovered it, it looked pretty bad.
Anyone hunting with a spear should also be required to have a minimum of 3 ninja stars and a samurai sword on their person while in the field… Buckskin kilt could be optional….
when spear season opens in Kansas I'll hang my stand at 25 ft and swan dive spear in hand pile driving the unsuspecting venison pile.
