Does / has anyone use the guillotine? This will be my first year attempting to whack a gobbler with my bow. I think I'm simply going to stick with the Muzzy's. Any input on why I should or shouldn't do this?
I always wondered that, this year im using a large cutting diameter rage head for turkeys. Those gobbler guillotines look like they would set sail as soon as they came off your string....
I have some gobbler guillotines that I'm thinking about trying. I've had them for years but never shot them. I've heard you can shoot them at straw bales and they'll withstand the impact. (of course, you'll need to buy new blades to hunt with.) My biggest concern is having them not hit my sight. I might need a full length arrow.
You don't... plain and simple. That's why I don't shoot them (well one reason). I shot them at pillows, carrots, cucumbers, you name it... and the same result every single time, broken blades. The little straw things are a pain in the arse. Inplainview, if you would like to use a large fixed blade head like the guillotine... get the Magnus Bullhead you will not be disappointed. I've shot some small game with them and they perform beautifully. As far as the muzzy's, a great head indeed. However, for turkeys I would highly recommend a mechanical broadhead. Honestly, I use the cheapest mechanicals that I can find (generally Eastman ST3 or Eastman Silver Tip/Silver strike). Good luck in whatever you choose... Here is a turkey from last spring with a mechanical head (Granted, one blade did break off... which caught me by surprise as this is the 6th or 7th turkey I've killed with these heads and never had a problem). http://youtube.com/watch?v=dGc92Ww1EjY
Doesn't matter what you use, just throw on an adder point or grasshopper point...basically a stopper....and that arrow will not pass through..Arrow in the bird= much better chance at retrieval...learned this the hard way on a marginal shot this winter.
Here is an Adder Point and they can still pass through but not for Tembry, he only shoots 32lbs and a 23" draw.
I, for one, will be using the Rocket, Buckblasters. I don't think that I want to try to whack the head off of a turkey. I'm just aiming for a body shot. Speaking of body shots, my wife is home. Later folks.
So far i have only used the expandables and will continue. Fixed blade im sure they would be just as good if shot placement is correct. As for the GG's, as said, i think they would be a pain to deal with. I wanna know ehere my heads are hitting through practice
My tip is using the "NAP Gobbler Getter" if you're worried about a pass through. I've said it before. I shot a turkey at 6 steps, bow set at 72lbs at 28", and the Gobbler Getter didn't make it's way through.
Both the turkeys I shot in KS didn't run 40 yards. Shot placement is key, if you can keep the arrow in the bird, all the better. Large cutting mechanicals are ideal for turkeys. I used my deer heads, the RM Snypers. I'll likely use them again this year as well.
